Ohio State offers huge Watch List DT
By Brad Bournival
When juniors put up the type of numbers Poona Ford (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head) registered last season, it’s hard not to notice.
Few haven’t, as the 6-foot, 285-pound defensive tackle now counts over 15 offers with the latest coming from Ohio State on Wednesday.
A standout for the Seahawks last season, Ford recorded 154 tackles -- 44 for loss --and logged 10 sacks.
And though the ESPN Watch List junior has South Carolina and Tennessee among his early favorites, he’s not considering Ohio State as a light offer.
In fact, Ford pointed to Urban Meyer’s two national championships as proof positive at how strong the Buckeyes are.
“It’s really a great accomplishment,” Ford said. “It feels great that someone with such a high status wants me to play for him.”
Many do, as evidenced by the fact Arizona, Boise State, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kansas State, Louisville, Marshall, Missouri, Ohio State, Purdue, South Carolina, Tennessee, Toledo, UMass and Utah State have tendered offers.
Ford’s offer further cements Meyer’s plan to remain a player in the South as the Buckeyes have now offered 10 juniors from either North or South Carolina.
Last season, Ohio State was able to pull defensive tackle Michael Hill (Pendleton, S.C./Pendleton) out of the state.
With Dylan Thompson (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) already in the fold, Ford becomes the 10th defensive tackle -- and the eighth Watch List junior at the position -- to be offered by the Buckeyes.
