Week in review: Openings and closings

6/4/2013

Sometimes the door opens, sometimes it closes.

While three Ohio State commitments earned golden tickets to The Opening, the Buckeyes lost another prospective pledge to Michigan and one to Clemson as well in a busy week full of recruiting.

Here’s what went down in a holiday week:

On Sunday, Kyle Berger, Dylan Thompson and Damon Webb headed to Columbus, Ohio, for a Nike Football Training Camp regional. The trio will now be seen on ESPN later this month in The Opening, a by-invitation-only camp that features the best from around the nation.

On Saturday, Ohio state target DeShone Kizer picked up an invitation to the Elite 11 finals, while Brandon Harris showed well. Harris also made an unofficial visit to Ohio State the day before. The big news of the day, however, wasn’t good from a Buckeyes standpoint as outside linebacker Chase Winovich chose the Wolverines over Ohio State and Pittsburgh.

Friday was a big day on the hardwood as the top-ranked player in the nation, Jahlil Okafor, put the Buckeyes in his final eight. ESPN analyst broke down why the Buckeyes should appeal to Okafor.

On Thursday, Justin Hilliard said he’d work out for Ohio State later this month at one of its camps. More bad news in the commitment trail happened, however, as ESPN 150 wide receiver Demarre Kitt chose Clemson over the Buckeyes and Tennessee. Arizona wideout Christian Kirk listed Ohio State as an unofficial visit destination. News also broke on a late Wednesday offer to another recruit from Virginia.

On Wednesday, safety Mattrell McGraw put Ohio State in his final eight. Three more offers went out, with two earmarked for rising Louisiana stars and a four-star tight end put the Buckeyes in his final three.

On Tuesday, the top junior college offensive tackle in the nation put the Buckeyes in his final six. Jermaine Eluemunor hasn’t booked a trip to Ohio State, but he explained in depth on why the school made his list. Speaking of top recruits, ESPN 150 quarterback Kyle Allen has a top five that includes the Buckeyes. Budding star Sherman Saunders has grown a liking to Ohio State, but likes Michigan as well. Dravon Henry broke down a top four that included the Buckeyes.
