The myth that Ohio State coach Urban Meyer isn’t recruiting the Buckeye state hard is just that. He's hitting Ohio this week as hard as the presidential candidates have for the past month.
The first-year Buckeyes coach toured Northeast Ohio on Monday, stopping at Cleveland Heights, Cleveland Glenville, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and Shaker Heights.
While he couldn’t talk to all the targets -- NCAA rules prohibit direct contact with underclassmen -- Meyer did get to check in on more than a few recruits.
“Everyone was like, ‘Urban’s here. Urban’s here. He’s here to see Marshon, Worley and Marcelys. Oh My God, Urban’s here. He’s one of the greatest coaches ever,’” Jones said. “Everyone knew who he was there to see.
“It felt good to have him there. It made the freshmen and sophomores hungrier to get some success.”
He went to Cleveland Heights for wide receiver Shelton Gibson, hit up St. Vincent-St. Mary for ESPN Watch List linebacker Dante Booker and was at Shaker Heights to check on ESPN 300 defensive tackle Donovan Munger.
While visiting Shaker Heights, Meyer, running backs coach Stan Drayton and Shaker Heights coach Jarvis Gibson sat down to talk about the future of Munger, who has Ohio State in his top 10.
“He pretty much told us that Donovan is No. 1 on their charts,” Jarvis Gibson said of Meyer. “They have other guys who are sitting there waiting to see what Donovan is going to do, but he’s the No. 1 guy.”
Meyer isn’t done in the area either as Ohio State commit Tracy Sprinkle (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) indicated the Buckeyes coach is scheduled to visit either Wednesday or Thursday.
