WR Corey Smith nabs OSU offer

10/17/2012

Corey Smith (Akron, Ohio/East Mississippi Community College) has taken the road less traveled to Division I football.

A wide receiver with almost unparalleled speed, Smith spent a season at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan before heading to East Mississippi Community College this year in an effort to latch on at a Division I program.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Smith is starting to see his hard work come to fruition with the latest offer coming from Ohio State and that went a long way, considering he has two years of eligibility left in Division I.

“Their coaching staff is great,” Smith said. “They’ve got awesome tradition and a winning program.”

Speaking of winning, Smith has done a lot of that. In high school, he led Buchtel to the state championship game his senior season.

At East Mississippi, he has the Lions off to a 7-0 start and is the unquestioned leader in the receiving core. He is tops on the squad in receptions (32), yards (536) and touchdowns (6) and is hitting at a 16.8 yards per catch average.

In 2011, Smith made 28 catches for 438 yards and scored two touchdowns.

“If I went [to Ohio State], they’d be getting somebody that works hard,” Smith said. “They’d be getting a leader and someone who can direct. I’m a great person on and off the field.”

Smith also has been talking to Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee. All have offered him, but he does not have a timetable for when he wants to make a decision.
