Almost immediately after Ohio State’s 29-22 overtime win over Purdue on Saturday, Cornelius "Corn" Elder (Nashville, Tenn./The Ensworth School) went to his official Twitter account and showed the Buckeyes some love.

Who could blame the ESPN 300 running back -- he’s ranked 238th overall -- after the way Ohio State came back to win?

When the Buckeyes drove 61 yards with 47 seconds left and converted a two-point conversion to send things into overtime, it was hard not to marvel at the 105,290 in attendance and cheer a little bit from his sideline seat at The Horseshoe.

Poll position: AP drops Buckeyes two spots

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The perfect record survived, but it didn't come with many style points.

The latter was apparently more important to the AP voters this week than Ohio State's unbeaten run through eight weeks after it escaped with a 29-22 overtime win over Purdue on Saturday.

The Buckeyes slipped two spots back to No. 9 in the nation when the latest poll was released on Sunday, with one-loss Oklahoma jumping ahead of them and leaving two teams with a defeat between the program and the top ranking.

That will make pushing for an AP national championship a bit tougher with four games left and no postseason opportunities available for the Buckeyes, but they still have several chances to prove themselves heading into the closing stretch of the season -- starting with a trip to Penn State on Saturday.

Only rival Michigan stayed with Ohio State on the inside of the top 25, though a handful of opponents are still showing up on ballots -- including that next opponent on the schedule as the second half of the Big Ten slate starts for the Buckeyes. Here's a look at how the Wolverines and the rest of those receiving votes fared over the weekend:

Michigan
  • Rank: No. 20
  • Date: Nov. 24
  • Where: Ohio Stadium
  • Last week: No. 23; beat Michigan State 12-10
Wisconsin
  • Rank: Received 31 voting points
  • Date: Nov. 17
  • Where: Camp Randall Stadium
  • Last week: Received 6 voting points; beat Minnesota 38-13
Penn State
  • Rank: Received 18 voting points
  • Date: Saturday
  • Where: Beaver Stadium
  • Last week: Received 1 vote; beat Iowa 38-14
Nebraska
  • Rank: Received 24 voting points
  • Date: Oct. 6
  • Where: Ohio Stadium
  • Last week: Received 4 voting points; beat Northwestern 29-28

Dante Booker says OSU still strong

Dante Booker (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) isn’t hard to find on the football field. He’s the ESPN Watch List junior making seemingly every tackle.

Whether it’s sacking the quarterback, grabbing an interception or virtually taking over the game defensively, Booker is in the backfield almost as much as the opposition’s running back.

But even he can be wowed.

Marcus Whitfield sees OSU undefeated

Consider Marcus Whitfield (Massillon, Ohio/Washington) a believer.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior no longer sits on the edge of his seat -- well, at least he says he doesn’t -- when an Ohio State football game is in peril.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a 1-point win over Michigan State, a 3-point victory over Indiana or an overtime thriller against Purdue, Whitfield knows the eventual outcome and enjoys the win.

3 Up, 3 Down: Ohio State 29, Purdue 22

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A few things Ohio State will feel good about and some issues it will need to correct after surviving for one more victory in a 29-22 thriller over Purdue in overtime on Saturday at Ohio Stadium:

THREE UP

1. The closer: Kenny Guiton had to do more than finish off a drive this time, and while the success wasn't nearly as instant against the Boilermakers, his relief appearance at quarterback will go down as perhaps the most memorable performance of the season for the Buckeyes. Up against seemingly insurmountable odds, needing a touchdown and a two-point conversion on the final drive with no timeouts and only 47 seconds, Guiton delivered both to further enhance his reputation.

Instant analysis: Ohio State 29, Purdue 22

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The undefeated season is intact.

But Ohio State might have suffered a pretty big loss at quarterback in the process.

Braxton Miller left the game late in the third quarter and was transported to the hospital, and the Buckeyes couldn’t muster anything on offense without the sophomore in a gritty 29-22 overtime win over Purdue on Saturday at Ohio Stadium that tested the resolve of Urban Meyer's program.

And another big challenge could be coming depending on the health of his star sophomore.

It was over when: The last pass of the game flew out of the back of the end zone in overtime, falling incomplete on fourth-and-5 and finally allowing Ohio State to exhale. The Buckeyes were pushed to the max, needing a last-second touchdown to even force the extra session before delivering a critical stop with its beleaguered defense on the final drive.

Game ball goes to: Kenny Guiton only added to his reputation as the ultimate closer off the bench. While the backup quarterback wasn't instantly effective -- as he was in the opportunities when Miller was briefly injured in the past three games -- Guiton delivered when it mattered most with the perfect season on the line, leading an impressive drive in the final minute and capping it with a two-point conversion pass to Jeff Heuerman that forced overtime in what had looked to be a lost cause.

Stat of the game: Among the worst rushing defenses in the Big Ten, Purdue put together a solid scheme to slow down Miller and held him to just 47 yards on 12 carries with a lost fumble before he left the game with an injury late in the third quarter -- with 37 coming on his last attempt.

How the game was won: The Buckeyes had to dig deeper than they have all season, but they still found a way to keep their record perfect as the passing game picked up some of the slack for a surprisingly ineffective ground attack. Chris Fields provided a spark as a receiver, including the diving touchdown catch that extended the game in the fourth quarter after not making a catch all season coming into the game.

What it means: A Heisman Trophy campaign could be on hold for a bit, but an undefeated season remains a possibility for the Buckeyes. The trick for them will be finding a way to respond with a banged-up defense and uncertainty with their most valuable player on offense moving forward as they shift their attention to a tough road trip to Penn State.

Purdue, meanwhile had its flickering chances of contending in the Leaders Division extinguished despite an impressive outing overall, showing life with its defense that could make it a tougher out down the road.

David Dawson decommited from Michigan and Justin Manning delayed his decision date, and that had a big-time ripple effect in this week's #BlueChipBattles Insider, as more than half of the top 10 spots have new occupants.

Where David Dawson might end up

When David Dawson (Detroit/Cass Tech) gave his decommitment to Michigan over the weekend, schools waited for an update on his recruiting plans and the offensive guard gave one in quick fashion.

He now has a top four of Alabama, Florida, LSU and Ohio State. With that in mind, BuckeyeNation looked at the four universities and has come up with the order it thinks the 6-foot-4, 282-pound Dawson might lean toward.

The ESPN 150 senior -- he’s ranked 87th overall -- has said he’s planning on taking official visits and will let the process play out before making a final choice.

Four downs: Keys to Ohio State-Purdue

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Critical areas for the Buckeyes as they hit the midway point of the Big Ten season with a visit from Purdue on Saturday (TV: ABC, noon).

FIRST DOWN
Perfect imbalance: The offense clearly isn't broke, so there's no need for Ohio State to fix anything with Purdue coming to town. Maybe the Buckeyes would like to show off some improvement in the passing attack and even up the balance with the running game, but there's really no need to bother.

Cornelius "Corn" Elder knows what he wants to see during his weekend visit to Ohio State.

"I just want to get to know the coaches and see the campus and the atmosphere," the ESPN 300 prospect from Nashville Ensworth told ESPN via text message.

Elder is listed as a running back but could play a number of positions. That would make him an interesting pick-up for the Buckeyes.

Picks to click: Buckeyes to watch

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A look at three Ohio State players who will be critical as the program hits the midway point of Big Ten play with a home date against Purdue and how they might impact the outcome on Saturday (TV: ABC, noon).

Jake Stoneburner

  • The basics: After three quiet games in the passing game, the Buckeyes got reacquainted with the senior as more than a blocker against Indiana. Stoneburner was once again a target, and he responded with four catches for 41 yards -- seemingly modest totals, but plays that still helped keep drives moving and got him involved once again.
  • By the numbers: Each of Stoneburner’s first three catches moved the chains, and the fourth came up just a yard shy of converting a second-and-11 in the third quarter against the Hoosiers. The Buckeyes picked up the necessary yardage on the next snap after Stoneburner got them back ahead of schedule.

Ohio State-Michigan comes a bit early

October, 18, 2012

The calendar says Michigan will travel to Ohio State on Nov. 24, but a small scale version will play out Friday in Hudson, Ohio. That’s where Elyria (6-2) will take on the Explorers (7-1) in an important Division I, Region 2 meeting.

Hudson controls its postseason destiny, while a win by the Pioneers would push the squad higher in the playoff picture. Ohio State commit and defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle calls it the biggest game of his career with Elyria. Michigan commit and inside linebacker Ben Gedeon says a win will catapult Hudson toward an even bigger showdown with North Royalton (8-0) in Week 10.

“I’ve wanted to lead this team to the playoffs since I started playing here,” Sprinkle said. “That’s my main goal. Every year, we want to go to the playoffs.

Five storylines: Purdue at Ohio State

October, 18, 2012
10/18/12
9:00
AM ET
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A look at the hot topics and pressing concerns as Ohio State prepares for a visit from Purdue on Saturday at Ohio Stadium (TV: ABC, noon).

Boiling blood: Thanks to the vacated 2010 season, Purdue is officially bringing a two-game winning streak with it on the road this weekend. The Buckeyes haven't forgotten about their loss to the Boilermakers a year ago in overtime, and they've seemingly made a point to seek out revenge against everybody that had their number during the difficult season a year ago. The short, technical winning streak probably won't be weighing on Ohio State's mind much, but erasing the memory of one loss in particular should have the program fired up as it tries to stay unbeaten.

Ground and pound: Indiana made a choice to try to limit Braxton Miller's rushing ability on the perimeter, and it had some measured success against the Ohio State quarterback. But that came at the expense of some huge holes for Carlos Hyde between the tackles, and Miller himself took advantage up the middle on yet another long touchdown run. The Buckeyes have rushed for 724 yards as a team over the last two games -- and they will be completing the trifecta of playing against the three worst running defenses in the Big Ten all in a row when the Boilermakers try to slow them down.
