Four trips in mind for WR Van Dyke
By Erik McKinney
It's been a relatively quiet summer for Alex Van Dyke (Elk Grove, Calif./Cosumnes Oaks), as the 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver attended just one camp. But recruiting hasn't slowed at all for Van Dyke, who will sit down soon with his coach and deliberate over his official visits.
Van Dyke said California, Oregon, Oregon State and UCLA are the schools that he has in mind for visits, though nothing official has been scheduled. He added that he will leave one trip open and decide on the fifth visit at a later date. However, there's no guarantee that the four schools he mentioned will get visits either.
"As of now, those are the four I've looked into and done research on," Van Dyke said. "I still consider myself open to all schools and if I find something better for me, I'll visit there."
One of the programs still with a chance to make the cut is USC. Van Dyke visited the Trojans this summer for their Rising Stars Camp.
"I did the best I could," Van Dyke said. "I had a sprained back because of a car accident, but the coaches said they liked what I did. They said they want to watch my first two games this year before deciding whether or not to offer."
What a school has to offer as far as opportunities at wide receiver and in the classroom will weigh the heaviest on Van Dyke's decision. He said he would like to study anatomy or kinesiology moving forward, as his dad is a trainer and mom is a massage therapist.
He would like to take all five visits during the season to get a feel for what the game day atmosphere is like, then decide following the season, possibly at an All-Star game.
A standout basketball player as well, Van Dyke said he'd like to explore the possibility of playing both sports in college, though he hasn't yet spoken to coaches about whether or not that will be possible.
Last season, Van Dyke caught 44 passes for 864 yards and 10 touchdowns.
