N.C. punter Matt Wogan commits to Ducks

6/28/2012

The Oregon Ducks added a seventh commitment to their 2013 recruiting class Tuesday evening when punter Matt Wogan (Indian Trail, N.C./Porter Ridge) pulled the trigger.

"I actually went to their camp a couple weeks ago and immediately knew it was where I wanted to be. It was my first BCS offer but that didn't matter to me. The coaching staff and everything about it just seemed right," Wogan said. "I knew I wanted to commit as soon as I got the offer but I had to wait until i got home to discuss it with my parents."

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Wogan is known for having one of the strongest legs in the country and is expected to provide immediate help in the punting and kicking game for the Ducks.

"Coach [Chip] Kelly told me that if I made the 60-yard field goal at the end of the camp, good things would be coming my way. I nailed the kick and I realized that it was huge for me," Wogan said.

"They actually offered later that day but I wanted to keep it quiet until I knew it was real. Once I got home and spoke with my parents, it sunk in. It's a dream come true."

After the camp, when Wogan was trying to reach assistant coach Tom Osborne, Kelly got a hold of him first and said, "I told you good things would come your way if you made that kick." Wogan froze and Kelly said, "Well, you made it. Matt, we want to offer you a full-ride scholarship."

"I was in shock. I asked if he was serious and he said yes."

It was even more shocking considering that Wogan felt that he had a tough start at the Oregon camp.

"I actually performed poorly in the morning session but Coach Osborne told me he was glad I did because he wanted to see if I had a short memory and could come back strong later in the day," Wogan said.

With four-year starter Jackson Rice exhausting his eligibility after the upcoming season, the Ducks will have junior college transfer Dylan Ausherman and Wogan as scholarship punters in 2013.

Known for his strong leg, Wogan will head to Eugene with an eye on all 3 specialist positions.

Wogan's pledge is the fourth commitment for the Ducks in the past eight days.
