Every Wednesday, the SoonerNation staff will take a quick-hit look at some of the top recruits and storylines facing Oklahoma recruiting for the week.

This week’s targets: OU will never be hurting at wide receiver as long as Jay Norvell remains the wide receivers coach. OU already has the commitment of one four-star wideout in Dallis Todd (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada), but Norvell is going after some big guns in Texas. He is visiting ESPN 150 receiver K.D. Cannon (Mount Pleasant, Texas/Mount Pleasant) and four-star WR Nick Alexander (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster). Both have visited the campus multiple times, but both are going to be incredibly tough to land. Norvell, though, is never afraid to aim high, and OU is squarely in the mix for them.

EDMOND, Okla. -- It’s not that Edmond Santa Fe had never sent a recruit to a top school before, but it has never been done on such a consistent basis as it is right now.

The Wolves have had top prospects before. Defensive back Reggie Smith was about as elite as they come before signing with Oklahoma in 2005 and making his way to the NFL. Quarterback Brandon Weeden got his start at Edmond Santa Fe, played at Oklahoma State and was a first-round pick in the NFL.

Oklahoma coaches have gone just about everywhere during the spring evaluation period. From the east coast to the west coast, the OU coaches have hit the recruiting trail hard.

The majority of the last two weeks have been spent in Texas, but now it’s time to hit the home base. Oklahoma high school spring football starts across the state for most schools on Monday. OU coaches will be out in full force, and so is the SoonerNation staff.

A list of places we’ll be and who we’re going to see that's generating OU and national recruiting interest:

The first ESPN 150 has been released with one of Oklahoma’s four commits making the cut in Under Armour All-American Justice Hansen (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe).

That doesn’t mean it’s a weak class for the Sooners as the list is peppered with top targets. Adding some of these 10 prospects -- listed from highest to lowest rank -- would be a great way to get OU back up in the recruiting rankings:

1. ATH Michiah Quick (Fresno, Calif./Central East)
6-foot, 170 pounds
ESPN 150 Rank: No. 22

Sante Fe (Edmond, Okla.) quarterback Justice Hansen became the newest Sooner when he committed in coach Bob Stoops' office over the weekend. The Watch List dual-threat QB discusses his choice of Oklahoma with Bob Przybylo.
NORMAN, Okla. -- When recruiting quarterbacks, Oklahoma offensive coordinator Josh Heupel searches for the same attributes every other college coach probably does.

The strong arm. Quick release. Prototypical size. Steadfast leadership.

Heupel, however, covets something else other coaches might not -- quarterbacks who don’t just play football.

For a recruit from the Los Angeles area, Norman, Okla., won’t often feel like a home away from home. But it is for ESPN Watch List wide receiver Dallis Todd (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada).

Todd created quite a stir a couple of weeks ago when he said he might commit to Oklahoma on his unofficial visit if everything went well.

Dallis ToddErik McKinney/ESPNESPN Watch List wideout Dallis Todd visited Oklahoma for its spring game and committed on Monday.
It did, and Todd lived up to his word. A source confirmed on Monday afternoon that Todd committed to the Sooners following a great trip over the weekend.

Todd, who is 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, has aunts and uncles in the Oklahoma City area and he said being able to be close to his family was going to be important.

OU still had to deliver on the visit, and the Sooners did that in spades. Todd spent the majority of his time with OU wide receivers coach Jay Norvell. When he wasn’t with Norvell, he was with fellow OU commit ESPN Watch List quarterback Justice Hansen (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe).

The bond between Todd and Hansen was so tight that Todd came along for Hansen’s surprise dinner on Saturday night to celebrate his commitment.

Todd said Saturday night he was feeling great about the Sooners, but he wasn’t going to commit without talking to his parents. He flew by himself to OU and wanted to talk to his parents face-to-face. Once that was done, he said his first call would be to Norvell to let him know he was joining Hansen in pledging to the Sooners.

Despite how much Todd expressed his interest in OU, it was still questionable if he would follow through on his commitment. With so many schools interested and one top offer after another coming his way -- Todd's offers include Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma State -- nobody would have blamed him had he decided to wait.

Instead OU once again has a big-time receiver recruit in the fold. Two weeks ago ESPN Watch List wide receiver Armanti Foreman (Texas City, Texas/Texas City) decommitted from OU. It never takes long for Norvell to find an answer.

Todd is OU’s fourth commit of the 2014 class and continues OU’s string of being able to land quality recruits from California.
It’s easy to think Oklahoma is lagging behind recruiting rivals Texas and Texas A&M on the recruiting trail. The Sooners enter the spring evaluation period with just three (or four, depending on Todd) commits, way behind the Longhorns and Aggies.

But OU has put itself in good position with numerous recruits going forward. And the spring evaluation period -- which starts today and goes until May 31 -- is another chance for the Sooners to make some noise.

So what should you expect from the evaluation period?

Sooners gain momentum over weekend

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma fans were nervous Friday afternoon upon learning that ESPN Watch List quarterback Justice Hansen (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) left school early for the day.

The logic was Hansen was leaving early so he could drive to Texas A&M and commit to the Aggies on Saturday. Hansen had previously said he was going to commit to either OU or A&M in person at the spring game.

QB Hansen commits to OU over Texas A&M

videoMonths of speculation ended Saturday afternoon as ESPN Watch List quarterback Justice Hansen (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) confirmed he has committed to the Sooners on his unofficial visit for OU’s spring game.

Hansen picked OU over Texas A&M and offers from schools such as Ole Miss, Auburn and Kansas State. He said earlier this week he was going to make his decision at the spring game, but it was unknown if it would be for OU or A&M.

Max Olson/ESPNESPN Watch List QB Justice Hansen is one of the top signal-callers in Oklahoma.
Hansen first appeared on the radar for OU quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel when Hansen was a freshman. Hansen has camped at OU the last two summers and has been a frequent visitor to campus for games the last two seasons.

Any doubt about how OU felt regarding Hansen was removed in February when OU offered Hansen at junior day. He was the only quarterback offer at the time and is still the only quarterback offer.

Heupel won’t have to make any more.

The Sooners were the clear favorite until the Aggies entered the race in January. Hansen took an unofficial visit to College Station, Texas, last month. A&M made a great impression, but the Sooners were never too far from his mind.

“He handled this process so well,” Edmond Santa Fe coach Lance Manning said. “He never felt any pressure. If you spent time with him this week, you would have had no idea he was getting ready to make such a huge decision.”

Hansen’s A&M visit opened his eyes that there is more out there than what’s in the state. But he also realized his position. As much as he wanted to wait it out more and get a better feel of what’s out there, he felt he couldn’t.

To be fair to the Aggies and Sooners, he wanted to make his decision as soon as he felt he was comfortable. Saturday was that time.

Hansen is the fourth in-state quarterback to pledge to the Sooners during Bob Stoops’ tenure. Jason White (Tuttle) and Sam Bradford (Oklahoma City Putnam City North) each won the Heisman Trophy, and Kendal Thompson is a sophomore at OU.

“He knows what it means to be a quarterback at OU from Oklahoma,” Manning said. “He’s not going to be afraid of that.”

  • Why judgment day looms for the Sooners' top target.
  • A Florida receiver is excited about visiting the Sooners this weekend.
  • An OU signee talks about his first trip to Norman.
  • One of the Sooners' top offensive line targets is making a return trip this spring.
  • Is OU back in the picture for in-state DE Clark?
  • An Ohio target has built a solid relationship with the OU staff.
  • Could another running back be in play for the Sooners?
  • A 2015 tight end committed to another school wants to visit OU again.
  • A 2015 lineman talks about recently adding a Sooners offer.

NORMAN, Okla. -- So far, Oklahoma has been more active on the recruiting trail for the 2014 class than it was last year. Offers have gone out sooner and more unofficial visits have taken place.

But the results? They’re not there yet. Heading into this weekend’s spring game, the Sooners have two commits in ESPN Watch List running back Samaje Perine (Pflugerville, Texas/Hendrickson) and strong safety Vontre McQuinnie (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster).

Contrast that with recruiting rivals Texas and Texas A&M. The Longhorns have picked up five 2014 commits in the last two weeks and have 14 total. The Aggies have 10 for the class and could get more with their spring game on Saturday.
