Will LB Aaron Porter visit Oklahoma?
By Greg Biggins
La Habra (Calif.) linebacker Aaron Porter remains a solid commitment to UCLA but a home visit from Oklahoma last week still has the athlete thinking.
Porter is one of the top linebackers in the region and committed to the Bruins last summer. He re-committed to the new staff after taking an unofficial visit in early December but when the Sooners offered a scholarship last week, Porter felt like he owed it to himself to at least listen.
“I had a great home visit with Oklahoma,” Porter said. “Coach [Brent] Venables came over and was really impressive, my head was spinning. I mean, Oklahoma is a big time program and when you see a coach walk in wearing a national championship ring, you can tell what a great program it is.
“Later that night, Coach [Jim] Mora called and talked to me and my dad and calmed me down a little. UCLA is still my No. 1 school but I’m still debating on whether or not to visit Oklahoma. Right now, things are kind of on hold with them because I’m not sure if Coach Venables is going to be back or not. Coach [Mike] Stoops is there now and he recruited me at Arizona so we’ll see what happens.”
Whether he visits OU or not, Porter said he’s very solid with his commitment to UCLA.
“I take my official visit next week and I can’t wait for it,” Porter said. “The coaches came by my school Friday and I’m excited to help recruit some guys to play with. I would love for us to get Ellis McCarthy, the more big guys to play in front of me the better. Oregon called my coach this week and asked if it was too late to recruit me. That’s a great program but I’m happy with UCLA and don’t think I want to add any other schools.”
