Bold predictions: Big 12

By Damon Sayles

One of the best things about national signing day is that, every year, it provides a last-minute surprise. Whether it involves a solid commit with an 11th-hour flip or an uncommitted player choosing a school to shock the masses, the day is good for full-fledged entertainment.

As we prepare for Wednesday, here are five bold predictions that we might see happen within the Big 12:

1. Oklahoma will add more than one ESPN 300 athlete on Wednesday

Shaun Nixon
Could longtime Texas A&M commit Shaun Nixon flip to TCU?
The Sooners have 23 commitments, and six of the 23 are in the ESPN 300. Look for Oklahoma to sign at least two ESPN 300 players. Three ESPN 300 players -- athlete Michiah Quick (Fresno, Calif./Central East), safety Steven Parker II (Jenks, Okla./Jenks) and current LSU defensive end commit Deondre Clark (Oklahoma City/Douglass) -- all have Oklahoma very high on their lists. It’s possible that Bob Stoops & Co. could finish off their 2014 class in style.

2. TCU steals one away from Texas A&M

There’s a lot of speculation on social media about whether or not ESPN 300 running back Shaun Nixon (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) has flipped from Texas A&M to TCU after taking an official visit to Fort Worth over the weekend. Nixon has gone silent since the visit, but many Aggies followers believe the switch will happen. Nixon, who is ranked No. 221 in the ESPN 300, switching to the Horned Frogs would be a big loss for the Aggies if it comes to fruition. Look for Nixon to wear purple and white when he signs on Wednesday.

3. ESPN 300 DT becomes a Longhorn, rejoins coach

Since decommitting from Louisville, Poona Ford (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head) has taken his time with making a quality decision. He has Texas, Purdue and Missouri as his top three, and with former Louisville coach Charlie Strong now at Texas, don’t be surprised if Ford follows Strong. Ranked No. 266 in the ESPN 300, Ford is scheduled to announce at 11:30 a.m. CT Wednesday on ESPNU.

4. ESPN 300 RB makes it official with West Virginia

West Virginia has been the favorite for ESPN 300 running back Donte Thomas-Williams (Durham, N.C./Hillside) for several weeks. The Mountaineers have been in front over Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and, most recently, Vanderbilt. If Thomas-Williams, who is ranked No. 138 in the ESPN 300, doesn’t pick West Virginia, it’ll be one of the biggest shocks of signing day.

5. ESPN Junior College 50 OT sticks with Texas Tech

There has been talk of ESPN Junior College 50 offensive tackle Dominique Robertson (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Community College) making one final flip, from Texas Tech to Kansas State. Robertson committed to Kansas State on Jan. 19 but decommitted to announce he was taking his talents to Lubbock, Texas, on Jan. 27 after an official visit. Kansas State fans want Robertson to flip back, but it’s not expected.
