Early Offer: Fournette’s 5-star performance

By Jeremy Crabtree

The Early Offer is RecruitingNation's regular feature, giving you a daily dose of recruiting in the mornings. Today's offerings: Five-star running back Leonard Fournette proved why he’s ranked as the nation’s No. 1 player; Oklahoma didn’t land any commits, but its official visit weekend was still a big hit with many high-profile recruits; and Florida running back commit Dalvin Cook continues to set up visits, which has to be making Gator coaches nervous.

He’s the real deal
Leonard Fournette (New Orleans, La./St. Augustine) erased any doubt as to who the true No. 1 player in the country is on Friday night with a Herculean effort against defending national championship River Ridge (La.) John Curtis on ESPN2. Fournette rushed for 262 yards on 36 carries and had a 27-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter that led to the game-winning two-point conversation. Fournette used everything in his repertoire -- highlighted by his speed, vision and pure brute strength -- to lead his team to victory. “I had to put my foot on the gas, put the pedal to the medal,” Fournette told the His performance in front of a national television audience went noticed by many, including rapper Lil Wayne, who tweeted “Leonard Fournette is the truth.”

OU’s West Coast weekend a success
While nobody expected the elite West Coast prospects traveling to Oklahoma for official visits this weekend to commit, it certainly looks like the Sooners made a favorable impression. Five-star athlete Adoree' Jackson (Gardena, Calif./Serra) tweeted pictures of himself with Bob Stoops in front of one of the Sooners’ national championship trophies, four-star running back Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) gushed about how big Stoops’ house was and four-star athlete Michiah Quick (Fresno, Calif./East) raved about the atmosphere. Oklahoma didn’t land any commits, but rest easy Sooners fans, the weekend was about getting OU firmly in the race. It sounds like the mission was accomplished.

Should Gators be concerned about Cook?
Four-star running back Dalvin Cook (Miami/Central) said when he committed to Florida he was planning on taking his official visits. He has proven to be a man of his word, already seeing Texas, setting up a trip to Arkansas on Nov. 2 and talking with USC about a visit after a head coach is hired. Cook, however, insists he is committed to Florida and talks often with other Gator recruits, like receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, Fla./Homestead). “Ermon told me he can’t wait to be in Gainesville, and we are going to do great things in Gainesville,” Cook said. So should Gator fans be concerned? One SEC insider said “maybe.” While UF feels confident that Cook will keep his commitment, the Gators are going to have to “sweat things out when he’s on those other visits.”
