Top 5, announcement date for OT Barrett

By Damon Sayles

The recruiting process for high three-star offensive tackle Ty Barrett (Dallas/Skyline) is in the closing stages, and on August’s first Saturday, he will don the hat of one lucky school.

Barrett has trimmed his list from seven to five, and the 6-foot-5, 310-pound tackle will announce his decision on Aug. 3 at his grandparents’ house in Cedar Hill, Texas. Barrett’s top five schools, in alphabetical order, are Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, TCU and Texas Tech.

“I gave myself this month to get it all out in the air,” Barrett said. “Those five are good schools. It’ll be a tough decision.

“The coaches from those schools stayed in touch with me. That was the big thing. Those coaches stayed in touch the whole time and never gave up when I got this offer or that offer.”

Barrett has multiple positives for all five programs. They all have respectable football traditions, and all are looking to have breakout seasons in 2013. Additionally, Barrett either has a former high school teammate attending or a current teammate committed to four of the five schools.

Barrett commented on all five of his finalists:

Oklahoma: “They have great tradition. Coach [Bill] Bedenbaugh is one of the best offensive line coaches out there. He really took his time and recruited me the whole way through. I’ve met his family and he’s met my family. It’s just a family-type atmosphere.”

Oklahoma State:Ra'Shaad Samples is down there. He’s one of my good friends who took me under his wing at Skyline. Then, Coach [Joe] Wickline is there. He’s probably the best offensive line coach out there. He gets people to the next level. He took his time out to hang with me during their spring game. That was big for me.”

TCU: “I’ve been over there a lot, and every time I go it’s something new. I went on an unofficial during the spring, and Coach [Eddie] Williamson was out of town, but he took a jet home just to get back and see me. That was a big thing to me. It’s been love between me and TCU coaches.”

Texas Tech: “The whole coaching staff is full of energy. I went for a visit, and it’s straight energy. I stay in touch with Coach [Eric] Morris all the time, and it’s not always about football. I can talk to him about anything. Plus, Derrick Dixon’s committed there. He’s like one of my brothers.”

Ole Miss: “Coach [Hugh] Freeze. I’m a big fan of his. Also, one of my best friends is DeVante Kincade. I’ll be going down there July 18 and 19 to visit for the first time. They’ve stuck in for a long time; they started recruiting me as a sophomore. It would be great to have to block Robert Nkemdiche every day. When the weekend comes, it wouldn’t be difficult to block anyone else.”
