Roundtable: OU's starting quarterback
By SoonerNation staff
Every Thursday, the SoonerNation staff will answer a roundtable question about OU football. Leave a comment or talk about it in our "There's Only One" forum.
Based on what we know right now, who will open the season as Oklahoma's starting quarterback?
Blake Bell has the most experience of any quarterback on OU's roster but has not thrown many passes in games.
• I keep hearing good things about Trevor Knight's chances of winning the starting job. Really good things. But right now, it's difficult for me to bet against Blake Bell. The Belldozer has more experience in the offense, more experience on the field, and a skill set that often gets overlooked. Bell can make all the throws, and his accuracy has really progressed over the last two years. As a proven thumper on the ground, he gives the Sooners a true dual-threat, too. Knight's future is bright in Norman. But the odds are against that future beginning this year.

• The reality is that there are still questions at the quarterback position for Oklahoma. Therefore it's hard to imagine anyone but Bell taking the first snap from center to start the 2013 season for the Sooners. Bell has the most experience, both on the field and in the system, and he's been preparing to step into the starting quarterback role for three years. So while Knight has made a lot of noise and has loads of upside for the long term, Bell will be OU's starting quarterback to begin 2013.

• Is there a real possibility Bell isn't the quarterback getting the first snap in 2013? I don't think so. No matter how talented and how promising the upside is for Knight, this is Bell's job to lose. The question is will he lose it? Bell has never been the focal point before, and there's no telling how he is going to respond being the man in the huddle. But if Bell performs the way everybody expects and the way OU fans need him to in order for the Sooners to remain a prominent player on the national stage, then there is nothing Knight, Kendal Thompson or Cody Thomas can do about it. It will be Bell all the way.
