2013 DE Daniel earns Oklahoma offer

By Jared Shanker

Avon, Ind., defensive end Elijah Daniel could be Indiana’s top prospect in the Class of 2013, and he’s starting to reel in offers to back that up.

Daniel, who already had offers from five schools, picked up his sixth Tuesday night when Oklahoma assistant coach Bobby Jack Wright spoke with Daniel.

“He’s excited about me and wanted me to come down there,” Daniel said. “He said they’re gonna recruit me real hard and are going to come [to Avon] in December.”

Before speaking with Wright on Tuesday, Daniel, an ESPNU 150 Watch List member, said he had almost no contact with Oklahoma. The offer caught him off guard, though he’s familiar with Oklahoma from its nearly weekly presence on TV.

“They’re always in big games and stuff like that,” Daniel said.

Under coach Bob Stoops, Oklahoma has put a number of defensive lineman in the NFL, including recent first-round draft pick Gerald McCoy, an impact tackle with the Buccaneers before suffering a season-ending injury. Daniel said the pro potential Oklahoma offers is one of the main things that intrigues him about the Sooners.

Recently, Daniel declared Florida his early leader, but Daniel is a prospect that will begin to pick up offers from a number of college football elites so his leader board will definitely see some shuffling once more offers come in.

Daniel has been to a number of the country’s top games this year, including LSU-Alabama, USC-Notre Dame and Alabama-Florida. This weekend, Daniel could visit Michigan for its game against Nebraska. Daniel said he hasn’t talked with Michigan coaches much, but feels it could be another Oklahoma situation.

Alabama and Florida State could be the next to offer, Daniel said.
