Sooner Snapshot: CB Dakota Austin

By Brandon Chatmon

Leading up to signing day, SoonerNation will take a closer look at the Class of 2013 prospects currently committed to Oklahoma. The in-depth analysis pieces will take a look at the ranking, estimated year of impact and potential role of each future Sooner.

Vitals: Cornerback Dakota Austin (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster) | 5-foot-10, 149 pounds

Committed: Feb. 2, 2013

Picked OU over: Nevada, New Mexico and UTEP

State of the position: OU is in need of talented young players at the position. All-Big 12 cornerback Aaron Colvin returns for his senior season but the rest of the cornerbacks are relatively inexperienced. And you can never have too many cover cornerbacks in the Big 12.

Similar to/potential role: Aaron Colvin. Austin, despite his lack of size, could develop into an ideal cover cornerback in the mold of Colvin. He also could become a terrific slot corner with the ability to matchup with quick slot receivers, such as Jalen Saunders, who create havoc in the middle of the field for defenses.

Expected impact: 2013. Even though he’s only 149 pounds, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Austin play as a freshman because he has the physical talent to arrive on campus as one of OU’s top covermen. Yet a redshirt season would be ideal to put on 15-20 pounds so he can handle the rigors of the Big 12. Bottom line: Austin could play as a true freshman if he shows the ability to be physical and competitive without being manhandled due to his lack of size. If he does that, his coverage ability should find him a spot on the field.
