OL Savage to pick between two schools
By Bob Przybylo
Going into his official visit at Oklahoma, three-star juco offensive lineman Dionte Savage (Yuma, Ariz./Arizona Western CC) had one concern: With only two years of eligibility left, the Sooners' depth chart had to fit to his liking.
After his visit, Savage has no more doubts.
Juco guard Dionte Savage will decide between Baylor and Oklahoma soon.
He’s happy he had a good visit, but it does complicate things for the Baylor commit. Savage said he is going to decide between the Sooners and Bears as early as tonight.
He took official visits to Texas Tech and Kansas last week but said the Red Raiders and Jayhawks are no longer in the equation.
OU definitely is.
“OU was great. One thing that stuck out is the great winning tradition,” Savage said. “I wouldn’t mind blocking for Damien again.”
Savage was hosted by OU running back Damien Williams, who also attended Arizona Western. Williams told Savage why he thought OU was a good fit and told him he would love to run behind Savage once again.
The first time Savage heard from the OU coaching staff was Tuesday, when OU quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel got in touch with him.
Savage spent a lot of time with Heupel and OU offensive line coaches James Patton and Bruce Kittle, looking over film and considering where he might fit in.
“We looked over the depth chart. There are a lot of guys, but like I told the coaches, all I want is an opportunity,” Savage said. “If I get that opportunity, I’ll take it from there. I can bring that physicality to the line at OU.”
The last month has been a whirlwind for Savage. The Baylor visit started it all, and he committed to the Bears two weeks ago.
He said this afternoon he’s not sure which school he will choose. But when he knows, he doesn't intend to waste time.
“Why wait?” Savage said. “No reason. If I’m ready, I’m ready.”
