Watch List OT impressed by OU approach

By Bob Przybylo

Some recruits are shocked at receiving offers. Others sort of know it’s coming. One ESPN Watch List offensive tackle had a feeling the Oklahoma offer was coming.

The Sooners didn’t disappoint, offering Ty Barrett (Dallas/Skyline) on Saturday afternoon. But OU did its best to stand out by how it offered the 2014 prospect.

“I didn’t know how it was going to happen. It made me feel a lot better the way it was done,” Barrett said. “It was face-to-face with Coach Bob Stoops. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

Barrett has been on OU’s radar for a while, since before his sophomore season. The Sooners were the first school to show interest in Barrett.

He has developed a good relationship with OU assistant coach James Patton, and Barrett said he spent much of Saturday talking with Patton and OU offensive tackles coach Bruce Kittle.

Talking football was fun with the coaches, but there was something else about Saturday that stood out to Barrett.

“The coaches’ sense of humor,” Barrett said. “It wasn’t all serious. It was a lot of fun. A great visit. A real good time.”

OU isn’t the only school hot on Barrett’s trail. Michigan coach Brady Hoke visited him earlier this week, and Barrett is scheduled to attend Texas’ junior day on Feb. 10.

An offer didn’t guarantee a commitment, and Barrett didn’t give one. But what he did give was a positive endorsement for OU and its program.

“I knew right now wasn’t the right time,” Barrett said. “The way they offered me, you know, that was a good way to offer.

“I’ve been liking OU for a long time. Now I think I like it even a little bit more. OU’s in my list of schools, but I don’t have any favorites.”

Barrett is 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds and took an unofficial visit to OU in October. He got a taste of what the OU experience is like then. But nothing could prepare him for how junior day started Saturday.

“When we came into the stadium, they showed us a hype video on the board. It gave me chills,” Barrett said. “It was an amazing video.”
