Q&A: 2014 Texas DT Zaycoven Henderson
By Brandon Chatmon
Oklahoma offered defensive tackle Zaycoven Henderson (Longview, Texas/Longview) last weekend. The 6-foot-2, 270 pound prospect is the lone uncommitted defensive tackle with an OU offer for the Class of 2014. As his first scholarship offer, OU made a terrific early impression on the Texas native. He talked about the offer, his interest in the Sooners and his athletic background with SoonerNation this week.
SoonerNation: How much interaction had you had with OU before this point?
Henderson: They sent me a lot of mail but I didn’t know it was real interest.
ZH: I was like, ‘Man, that’s crazy, that’s a big school.” It just opens up the door for more options. If that was my only option, I’d definitely go there. It’s a great school and my uncle went to that school (Tyrone Rodgers) and they recruited Na’Ty.
SN: How did getting an OU offer impact you?
ZH: It boosted my confidence way up. I never thought I would get an offer, with where I’m coming from. People told me to keep my head on straight and God would look out for me. I guess it worked out in the long run.
SN: How much do you get to watch OU?
ZH: I watched them a lot when Adrian Peterson was there. I don’t have a lot of time, I’m a busy person, I play basketball too.
SN: Have you thought about what you’re looking for in a school?
ZH: Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to get an offer from Oklahoma. I was expecting to get an offer from some small school, because of my height. They’re my very first offer, evidently they see something in me that others don’t.
SN: What other schools have expressed interest?
ZH: Missouri, Texas Tech, SMU.
SN: How much of an obstacle has your height been for you?
ZH: I don’t let it hold me back, I let it be my motivation. I might not be the biggest guy, I might not be the strongest guy but I tell you what, I’m going to ballhawk and give you my all and I’m going to go until the whistle blows.
SN: How does your basketball background help you?
ZH: It helps me a lot with keeping my footwork right.
SN: What are your biggest strengths?
ZH: I’d say my quickness off the ball, my hands and I have real good feet. And I have pretty good strength.
SN: What things do you want to improve before college?
