Watch List LB Akem rolling in offers
By Bob Przybylo
For a while it has looked like Watch List linebacker Gyasi Akem (Broken Arrow, Okla./Broken Arrow) was going to get an Oklahoma State offer.
The Cowboys have been recruiting Akem hard for a solid year and he has been a frequent visitor to Boone Pickens Stadium. There wasn’t much surprise when the offer came Saturday.
Broken Arrow, Okla., junior Gyasi Akem received offers from Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in the last three days.
There was plenty of surprise Monday when Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops let Akem know the Sooners are also entering the race, offering Akem.
“This has been so eye-opening for me. I’m just trying to stay humble,” Akem said. “It’s nice to know the top schools have recognized my ability, but I’m just trying to help our football team in any way I can. It’s all about the state championship.”
Akem, who is 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, was offered by Clemson and Missouri earlier last week before getting the offer from the Cowboys at their junior day.
He didn’t have many top offers coming into the month, but he had a feeling some might be coming his way. With that in mind, he’s making sure he takes things slowly.
“No, I didn’t think about committing to OSU on Saturday,” Akem said. “I’ve talked to my mom about it, and we’re going to wait and let the process play out.”
That’s a good thing for OU because the Sooners haven’t been in the picture. Before talking to Stoops on Monday, Akem said he only remembers talking to Stoops one other time.
And despite OU actively seeking out Broken Arrow teammates for unofficial visits to games last season, Akem didn’t attend one OU game. If Akem keeps his recruitment open for the 2013 season, that will no doubt change.
Akem was originally going to attend OU’s junior day on Jan. 12 before the event was postponed. With OU's junior day now this Saturday, Akem said he is not sure if he will attend OU’s or Baylor’s, as both are on the same day.
One of Akem’s teammates, quarterback Coleman Key, said he will be at OU’s junior day.
