Sooner Snapshot: WR K.J. Young

Leading up to signing day, SoonerNation will take a closer look at the Class of 2013 prospects currently committed to Oklahoma. The in-depth analysis pieces will take a look at the ranking, estimated year of impact and potential role of each future Sooner.
Oklahoma receiver commit K.J. Young is rated the nation's No. 84 receiver and is the No. 68 overall prospect from California.
ESPN.com grade: 78, three-star
ESPN.com rankings: No. 84 receiver, No. 98 in West region, No. 68 in California
Picked OU over: Boise State, UNLV, Colorado State and UTEP
State of the position: The Sooners have several quality young receivers already on campus so the situation at receiver is looking rosy. Nonetheless, there’s a lot of inexperience at the position, meaning a young player could come in and earn time if they’re supremely talented.
Pros: “This guy has some of the best hand-eye coordination and ball skills in this class and has fallen under the radar to some degree. Body control and sideline awareness is exceptional.” -- ESPN scouting report
Cons: “He has a tendency to round off his routes. Needs to learn to drop his weight in order to get in and out of his breaks quicker.” -- ESPN scouting report
Similar to/potential role:Kenny Stills. Young appears to have the versatility to play in the slot or on the outside. His ball skills and playmaking ability could land him in the slot where he could be a terrific safety net for the Sooners quarterback.
Expected impact: 2014. While Young is talented, he’d have to be exceptional to play immediately and make a flawless transition into college football. OU’s receiving corps is pretty deep and Young could use a redshirt season to bulk up and get familiar with OU’s offensive system.
