Sooner Snapshot: DT Charles Walker

By Brandon Chatmon

Leading up to signing day, SoonerNation will take a closer look at the Class of 2013 prospects currently committed to Oklahoma. The in-depth analysis pieces will take a look at the ranking, estimated year of impact and potential role of each future Sooner.

Vitals: Defensive tackle Charles Walker (Garland, Texas/South Garland) | 6-foot-4, 280 pounds

Committed: Jan. 12, 2013

Charles Walker
Three-star defensive tackle Charles Walker is rated No. 40 in the nation at his position and the No. 75 overall prospect in the state of Texas.
ESPN.com grade: 79, three-star

ESPN.com rankings: No. 40 defensive tackle, No. 92 in Midlands region, No. 75 in Texas

Picked OU over: New Mexico, North Texas, Houston and others

State of the position: The Sooners need impact players at defensive tackle with the majority of their defensive tackle rotation players leaving the program. OU needs as many as three defensive tackles to emerge as contributors, meaning Walker should get the chance to make an immediate impact.

Pros: “Walker is an interesting kid. He is big and powerful and can move fairly well for his size. If he can stay healthy he could develop into a real disruptive player and turn into a bit of a steal for a program.” -- ESPN scouting report

Cons: “He can lack consistency, but flashes a good initial burst off the ball.” -- ESPN scouting report

Similar to/potential role: Jamarkus McFarland. Walker appears to have the physical ability and athleticism to be a disruptive force in the middle but will have to prove it with his play on the field before he can be considered a game-changing interior player.

Expected impact: 2013. If healthy, Walker could play immediately because he has the physical ability to be the most disruptive defensive tackle the Sooners sign in this class. If not, he could face a redshirt season then be ready to make an impact in 2014. But the Sooners need him to play this fall.
