2014 S Bonney talks offers, junior days

By Sam Khan Jr.

The fall was quite busy for 2014 safety John Bonney (Houston/Lamar), who was part of a long, prosperous playoff run with his Redskins teammates all the way to the Texas Class 5A Division I state championship game.

While he was busy on the field helping his team reach rarefied air, things were busy off the field as well. The 6-foot, 175-pound prospect entered the season with three offers and is now up to nine with Auburn and UCLA jumping on board.

Auburn cornerbacks coach Melvin Smith, who was previously at Mississippi State offered Bonney.

"He came to a practice and said he liked what he saw, said that I had good hips and everything," Bonney said. "It's great. Getting attention from that school is really good. Having LSU and now Auburn [offers], it's great to get recognition from that conference."

UCLA defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin is recruiting Bonney for the Bruins.

"He said he had me on the top of their board for awhile but he hadn't been able to get in contact with me," Bonney said. "When he finally did he got a chance to tell me and I got a chance to talk to Coach [Jim] Mora as well. I thought it was pretty cool. Coach Mora being a [defensive backs] coach in the NFL and coaching for like 25 years, I thought it was pretty cool. Going to a school like that would be cool with the experience of that kind of coach."

Bonney participated in the U.S. Army National Combine with hundreds of other top underclassmen earlier this month. He'll play some basketball and run track during the spring but his football recruiting calendar will remain busy with several planned junior days.

Duane Akina at Texas and Marcel Yates at Texas A&M are among those who have invited Bonney to a junior day. He plans to attend those and a few others as well.

"I know for sure I'm going to try to go to the Oklahoma one, the Texas one and hopefully the Texas A&M as well," Bonney said. "And some of the schools that have already offered me, I'm going to try to get to those as well. I'm going to try to go to TCU's also. I'm going to try to go to as many as possible. I just have to make sure I can fit it in my schedule."

He said recently spoke with Yates and his father, Jerry Bonney, recently spoke with Akina.
