Watch List RB Thomas commits to OSU

Class of 2014 ESPN Watch List running back Devon Thomas (Broken Arrow, Okla./Broken Arrow) has just added fuel to the Bedlam fire.

Class of 2014 running back Devon Thomas decommitted from the Sooners earlier this week and now intends to go to Oklahoma State.
Thomas confirmed he committed to Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon. He originally committed to Oklahoma before announcing his decommitment from the Sooners on Monday.

“I talked to the coaches today, and it just feels right for me,” said Thomas, who is 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds. “I’ve been there several times the last two seasons. I believe OSU is the best place for me to succeed.”

The one coach that has stood out to Thomas is OSU running backs coach Jemal Singleton. Thomas also forged a deep relationship with OU running backs coach Cale Gundy. Thomas said he saw Gundy like a father. With Singleton, it’s different.

“He’s a cool dude,” Thomas said. “He’s like my buddy. But then he’s also very smart and a great coach.”

Thomas had a disappointing junior season, being suspended for the first three games for unspecified reasons. He was able to have success when he returned but not the eye-popping numbers he had as a sophomore. Throughout the season, he didn’t want to talk recruiting. He was serious about that stance, and it’s something Singleton understood.

“I really liked that. He would talk to me a lot during the spring and summer,” Thomas said. “But he understood about the season. He didn’t talk to me too much. I appreciated his understanding.”

Even though it felt like OU was in the lead for Thomas the entire way dating back to his sophomore season, the Cowboys never gave up.

Thomas said he made too hasty of a decision by committing to OU last month. What he did this week was extensive research on OSU and the things Singleton had been telling him.

“He’s talked to my parents before, and my parents trust him,” Thomas said. “What I found out during my research was everything he was saying about the OSU program is the truth.”

Thomas is the first commit for OSU’s 2014 class and another jab in the back-and-forth battle between OU and OSU. The Sooners were able to flip the commitment of former OSU pledge Ogbonnia Okoronkwo (Houston/Alief Taylor) on Wednesday.
