Juco DT Campbell eyes Oklahoma, Baylor
By Brad Bournival
With 14 Division I programs already offering Demetrius Campbell (Eagle Lake, Fla./East Los Angeles College), the 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive tackle won't slip under anyone's radar.
Add another 10 with interest, and the junior college standout is generating a lot of attention as national signing day approaches.
While Campbell can take advantage of the mid-term signing period next week, it's likely he won't sign with a school until Feb. 6.
"I want to play it out," Campbell said. "I'm the type of guy who might not know where I'm going until the day before signing day."
He has made an official visit to Western Kentucky, but his two favorites are Baylor and Oklahoma right now.
"Both of them only have one defensive tackle or two defensive ends in their 2013 class," Campbell said. "I could come in and compete right way. I feel like I'm an older guy that brings in that leadership right away. I know how to get in the backfield."
He also knows how to get attention, as both schools are interested.
Western Kentucky isn't out of the equation, but the Hilltoppers unfortunately had him on an official visit when Willie Taggart left to take the job at South Florida.
"It was a crazy situation," Campbell said. "It was kind of hard to fully enjoy myself, knowing that the coaching staff possibly could not be there. It was a good visit, but it could have been better."
While Campbell is willing to redshirt, he's hoping to go to a program where he can make an immediate impact.
