Reilly Gibbons talks Oklahoma offer
By Corey Long
Oklahoma assistant coach Bruce Kittle reached out to Class of 2014 Watch List offensive lineman Reilly Gibbons (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Pete Catholic) this week and offered the 6-foot-6, 260-pound junior.
For Gibbons, a converted tight end, it’s his 23rd offer. The Sooners join North Carolina, Miami, Illinois, Rutgers, South Florida, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and others.
“Coach Kittle and my dad had been in communication for a while before he offered,” Gibbons said. “And the coach actually came to my school this week.
“It’s very exciting because Oklahoma is a great program and has a long history of producing top linemen.”
Gibbons is currently playing basketball and waiting for his opportunity to perform at the Under Armour National Combine at the end of the month.
“That’s the most exciting thing for me right now because I want to show everyone that I’m the real deal and I can compete with the best players in the nation,” Gibbons said. “Everyone can really see what I’m about.”
As for other schools, Gibbons says his dad has been talking to coaches from Alabama and Notre Dame, but he is remaining patient.
“Most programs are trying to close out their 2013 classes so I’m sure things will pick up more after that happens,” Gibbons explained. “I’m just staying patient and working on getting stronger and more athletic.”
Gibbons said he will likely go to several junior days and take unofficials during the summer, but he and his father haven’t put together a schedule yet.
