Sooners add another tailback to stockpile

By Brandon Chatmon

Oklahoma got a win on the football field on Saturday.

Yet a win on the recruiting trail could prove to be the most memorable occurrence on Nov. 17, 2012.

Devon Thomas
ESPN Watch List running back Devon Thomas is one of the state's top junior prospects.
2014 ESPN Watch List running back Devon Thomas (Broken Arrow, Okla./Broken Arrow) committed to the Sooners on Saturday over offers from Oklahoma State, Clemson and others. Thomas joins receiver Armanti Foreman (Texas City, Texas/Texas City) to give the Sooners a quality start at the skill positions in their 2014 recruiting class.

Thomas’ commitment means the Sooners continue to compile quality ball carriers in the program with redshirting freshman Alex Ross already on campus and 2013 commitment Keith Ford set to sign in February.

During the 2011 season, the Sooners learned you can never have too many quality running backs as they began the season with a deep running back corps then finished with two healthy scholarship running backs in Roy Finch and Brennan Clay.

Even though OU appears poised to enter the fall of 2014 with three quality running backs in Ross, Ford and Thomas, don’t be surprised to see the Sooners pursue another ball carrier. Nathan Starks (Las Vegas/Bishop Gorman) already boasts an OU offer, would be a good fit alongside Thomas and has had positive things to say about the Sooners.

Regardless, the Sooners should feel secure about the running back position for the next three seasons. Starter Damien Williams should return in 2013 after a breakout junior season with Ross, Ford and Thomas set to battle for starting duties in 2014.

Thomas’ pledge means the Sooners are stacked at the position, it’s hard to imagine a much better scenario at running back for OU.
