The Sooners killed two birds with one stone with Alexander’s pledge. It ended a long drought since its last commitment -- OU last picked up a commit on July 31 (Hatari Byrd) -- and it secured another linebacker prospect in Alexander after some struggles to gain momentum recruiting the position.
At 6-foot and 190 pounds, it’s easy to question Alexander’s size at the linebacker position. But the success of Corey Nelson (6-0, 219) and Aaron Franklin (6-1, 212) should help lessen any concerns about the size requirement to have success under new linebackers coach Tim Kish. And freshman Eric Striker (6-1, 198) has impressed in his first semester on campus.
All three current Sooners have similar body types to Alexander, who should be able to add 15 to 20 pounds to his frame by his second or third year on campus.
For OU, it also lessens the urgency to land linebackers during the final three months of recruiting. Alexander joins Jordan Mastrogiovanni (Dallas/Jesuit Prep) as Sooners linebacker commits and will allow Kish to be diligent as he evaluates and pursues additional linebacker prospects.
With Franklin, Shannon and Eric Striker, the Sooners should feel good about their young players at the position so they can shoot for the stars -- such as E.J. Levenberry (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) and Mike Mitchell (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian Academy)-- or look to land a senior sleeper as they look to finalize their recruiting class at linebacker.
