Sooners on top for 2014 ATH Johnson

By Max Olson

Darrion Johnson (Brenham, Texas/Brenham) picked a heck of a time to attend his first two Texas games.

The ESPN Watch List 2014 athlete took an unofficial visit to Texas last week for the Longhorns’ loss to West Virginia, and he received a pass from Oklahoma to attend the Red River Rivalry on Saturday.

“It was really good,” Johnson said. “I like both schools so it was cool to see them compete against each other. I think Texas just made a lot of mistakes.”

Johnson holds offers from Oklahoma and UTEP so far and said his four favorite schools so far are OU, Texas, LSU and Oklahoma State. After Saturday, one school stands above the rest.

“I’d say Oklahoma,” he said. “I like how they run their defense.”

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound prospect said he’s expecting Oklahoma State to offer him a scholarship soon. But will Texas?

Johnson fell off the radar a bit this summer when the Longhorns offered six other 2014 defensive backs, but he’s hoping that changes soon after catching up with his recruiter, Oscar Giles, last week.

“He said he’s happy I came, and he wished they could’ve won for me while I was there,” Johnson said. “They’ve said keep working hard and eventually [an offer] will come in. He told me to keep locking them down and they’ll probably come to one of my games or playoff games this season.”

After missing the first two games of his junior season with an ankle injury, he’s back on the field and making a difference again.

“The season has been going pretty good. I’m playing safety and running back,” Johnson said. “I think I’m better at backpedaling and covering this year. This year my goal is not letting receivers catch any passes.”
