Q&A: OU receiver commit Austin Bennett
By Bob Przybylo
Going into June, Oklahoma was still searching for answers at wide receiver for its 2013 class. By the end of June, the Sooners had locked down two quality commits.
One of those is three-star athlete Austin Bennett (Manvel, Texas/Manvel). Bennett, who is 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, was recognized by OU at a satellite camp in the Houston area in mid-June. He followed that with an unofficial visit to OU the next week and committed on the visit. His senior season has been a mixed bag as defenses have keyed in on him.
Austin Bennett plays on the same high school team as two Texas A&M commits, Tavares Gardner and Kyrion Parker.
He has yet to score a touchdown, but he’s not worried much about it as long as his team keeps winning. Bennett recently was able to make it back to OU for the Kansas State game:
SoonerNation: Your senior season has been quite an adjustment for you with the way defenses are playing you. How have things been going?
Austin Bennett: It’s going OK. Most teams have been double-teaming me and Kyrion [Parker, a Texas A&M commit]. Last week they moved me from the slot to the outside to try to spread things out more and give us a better chance to produce.
SN: Some OU fans have been concerned about your lack of those eye-popping numbers so far. Are you at all disappointed with not having put up the big numbers?
Bennett: No, not really. I’ve been real close a couple of times to scoring, but it just hasn’t happened yet. You have to stay patient and be ready. My time is going to come, and I’m going to make the most of it.
SN: How has that transition from the slot been going for you?
Bennett: I think it’s going well. We only started using it for the first time last week. It’s a little different playing on the outside, but I had a good game last week. They’re using me some on jet sweep runs, too. We have a great offense that’s tough to defend with how many talented players we have.
SN: You visited OU in the summer. Obviously a much different experience visiting on a game weekend. What was it like two weeks ago?
Bennett: It was an amazing experience. It was great to see the coaches and players again. The fans were incredible. I had heard about how great the OU fans are but seeing it in person definitely stood out.
SN: Was there anything said by the coaches or players that stood out?
Bennett: The coaches told me to be ready to come in and play early. I’m going to have my chance to compete. I liked hearing that. Even though we lost, the team had a positive attitude and stuck together.
SN: You're originally an Arkansas commit, have the Razorbacks or any other schools tried to get in touch with you?
Bennett: There have been a couple. Arkansas and West Virginia are the two schools contacting me the most. I’m pretty set on the Sooners, especially after how great last week’s visit went.
