Staff predictions: Kansas State vs. OU

By SoonerNation staff

Oklahoma 35, Kansas State 21
Like last year's bout, this game will be close through the first half. But K-State will struggle to handcuff Landry Jones in the second half again, and touchdown passes to Justin Brown and Trey Metoyer allow the Sooners to pull away. In its first test, the OU defense comes out with a passing grade. K-State QB Collin Klein pulls off a couple of big runs. But the secondary keeps the Wildcats from breaking anything off deep in the pass.

The Sooners get an early lead thanks to two Landry Jones touchdown passes and one forced turnover by the defense. KSU remains committed to its game plan and mounts a comeback after halftime but the Sooners take a page out of the Wildcats' "book of success" as Justin Brown's punt return for a touchdown extends OU's narrow lead and the Sooners pull away in the final 15 minutes.

This is going to be a showcase game for Mike Stoops' defense, led by middle linebacker Tom Wort. The defense contains Collin Klein in both the running and passing game and makes him look ordinary. Special teams put the Wildcats in good field position on a few occasions or else the differential would even be bigger. Offensively, it's a good night for Dominique Whaley. He broke his ankle on the first play from scrimmage against KSU last season and exacts his own form of revenge with a couple of rushing touchdowns. The debate between Whaley and Damien Williams continues about who should be starter, but it's a good problem to have as both continue to rack up yards and touchdowns.
