Sekou Clark next big DE at Denton Ryan

By Damon Sayles

Sekou Clark (Denton, Texas/Ryan) has heard it on multiple occasions, even though he's not totally in favor of it. Fans call the 2014 defensive end “the next Mario Edwards.”

True, Clark and Edwards share the same high school and position, but the one player that Clark wants to be compared to isn’t the Florida State signee.

“I’m not Mario. I’m only Sekou. I can only be me,” said Clark, who is slated to be the starting strong-side defensive end for Ryan when the 2012 season kicks off late August. “I’d like to better than Mario someday. I know it’s just something I’m going to hear until I graduate, but I’m trying to have everyone focus on Sekou and make my name.”

Clark was a reserve defensive end last season, playing behind Edwards and Baylor signee Dominique Banks. He didn’t see a lot of time on the field because of the two playmakers in front of him.

Yet still, Clark’s name has resonated around the recruiting world. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Clark is a pass-rushing end who is anticipated to be a major defensive threat in his class. He’s hoping to bulk up to 255 pounds by the end of his senior season.

“I’m a really good speed rusher,” Clark said. “I’m trying to gain more weight, make myself a better player and get as many sacks and tackles as possible. I’m out there working very hard, every down.”

Clark is still searching for his first offer, but he has interest from several programs, including Notre Dame, Florida State, Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon and more. He’s attended camps at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, and he’s planning on attending upcoming camps at Texas A&M, Texas Tech and TCU. Clark also is taking an unofficial visit to SMU on Monday.

“Mario and Dominique didn’t really leave the field when they were here, so there’s not a lot of film on me,” Clark said. “But I’m getting some attention out there. I must be doing something.”
