Ahmad Thomas commits to Oklahoma

5/22/2012

Miami Central defensive back Ahmad Thomas was offered by Oklahoma assistant coach Mike Stoops last week. And after several phone calls the 6-foot, 200-pound safety became the Sooners' 8th commitment.

Thomas said he felt a strong bond with right away.

"When they came in to offer me I was just like 'Wow, Oklahoma is here....for me?'," Thomas said. "I called coach Stoops back the next day. And I called him Monday and today as well.

"I just wanted to know their level of commitment to me and coach Stoops didn't beat around the bush. Once I saw that he was legitimately interested in me it was a no brainer. Are you kidding me? It's Oklahoma!"

Thomas had over 80 tackles and an interception during his junior season. He holds offers from over a dozen programs including Florida State, Auburn, Notre Dame, Illinois, Mississippi State, West Virginia and South Florida.

Before Oklahoma offered Thomas was seriously looking at N.C. State, Auburn and USC. He also liked Notre Dame but lost contact with the Irish a few weeks ago.

Thomas credits the Miami Central program with his development to this point. Over the last three years Central has sent 26 players to FBS programs.

"The coaches at Central just put us through incredible workouts and conditioning," Thomas said. "If you can make it through a practice at Central you can pretty much do anything because it's as hard as it gets.

"And that's why players from this program do well in college. We are taught to be humble and ready for work."

Thomas will visit Oklahoma in the fall for an official and will spend most of the summer doing team 7-on-7 tournaments and other events.

"It's a very exciting day for me because it's an honor to be committed to Oklahoma," Thomas said. "This is a place where I can become a better player and a better person."
