Chat wrap: Corey Nelson's impact
Here are a few highlights from the chat:
Due The Gundy (Tulsa): I don't understand the negative talk about Corey Nelson. Doesn't he have too much talent not to start or at least play a lot? What do you think will happen with him this fall.
Jake Trotter: I agree. He has too much talent not to play a major role on the defense. He went through some growing pains adapting to the new regime on defense... but he turned a corner the final week of spring ball and played really well in the Red-White game. He led the D with 8 tackles, a positive sign for the fall.
Mike (Orlando, FL): What does the running back situation look like?
Jake Trotter: Dominique Whaley is the starter if he's healthy. Roy Finch and Brennan Clay will get spot carries. Damien Williams is the X factor, and could warrant a lot of playing time if he's good as his highlight tape. We'll see.
Michael (Long Beach, CA): Jake, with the backs on the roster and the commits for 2014, forgot all about Alex Ross. You think he gets lost on the depth chart or is he looked at for a position change?
Jake Trotter: No, not at all. In fact, I think he could be a star at OU. He only played RB two years in high school, which means he hasn't completely tapped into that potential yet. If Ross can stay healthy, he could be really special.
Steve (Charleston, WV): Jake, there has been a lot of talk about Mike Stoops return to OU, but do you think he'll be able to restore the the dominating defense that once he commanded. Let's not forget that the Big XII didn't have so many high octane offenses ten years ago.
Jake Trotter: I don't think it will happen overnight and I don't think it will be like it was in 2001 when OU was shutting every other team out. But I really like what Mike has done with the secondary so far, and I would expect them to be improved at the back end, for sure.
