Both Texas and Oklahoma are feeling pretty good about their 2012 recruiting class. Saturday’s Red River Rivalry game between No. 3 OU and No. 11 Texas isn’t necessarily about swaying this year’s recruits.
With a bevy of top 2013 prospects planning to be in attendance, however, Saturday could be a showcase day for either the Sooners or the Longhorns in terms of getting a leg up on the recruiting trail.
One running back both schools already are pursuing is junior Dontre Wilson (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto). Wilson, 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, has rushed for five touchdowns and has caught passes for two more. He is ranked No. 27 on the ESPN Powerade Fab 50.
SoonerNation: How different has this year been for you compared to last year?
Dontre Wilson: It’s been very different but very good. I already have more carries than what I had all last year. It’s been great. There is no such thing as being tired at DeSoto. Our practices are so intense that it gets you prepared for anything.
SN: A lot of schools are already recruiting you, including OU and Texas. What do you like about the Longhorns?
Wilson: I was born and raised here and that means a lot to me. I’ve talked to coach [Bruce] Chambers and coach [Major] Applewhite. I wouldn’t put them over OU or any other team at this point, but I’m definitely interested.
SN: And what is so appealing about the Sooners?
Wilson: My favorite running back went there. No. 28 with the Minnesota Vikings -- I love Adrian Peterson. OU has a great tradition and is always in the championship hunt.
SN: You’re one of several juniors who will be at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday for the Red River Rivalry. What are you hoping to gain from this experience?
Wilson: I’m looking forward to the game atmosphere. It’s good to see how the top coaches and players prepare for a game like this. It’s going to be a great experience. You don’t know who’s going to win this one and that makes it even more exciting.
SN: Have you decided which sideline you’re going to be on?
Wilson: I’m not sure which side I’m going to be on. I don’t think I’m going to make my decision until probably right before the game. It’s going to be a little like choosing the college you want to go to.
SN: With so many schools recruiting you, what are you looking for?
Wilson: I’m looking for a team that uses their running back a lot. I need an offense that’s going to fit my style of play. I’m a real shifty back, and I want the opportunity to make plays.
SN: Have you made any other unofficial visits?
Wilson: No, I’m going to wait. I want to finish my junior season, and then I’m really going to start focusing on that stuff.
