Mike Stoops has been getting to know many of his players over the last few weeks. But Oklahoma’s new defensive coordinator has known two of his key defenders for awhile now.

When he was head coach at Arizona, Stoops recruited both safety Tony Jefferson and cornerback Demontre Hurst out of high school.

“I’ve (known) him for years,” said Hurst, entering his third year as a starter. “He has acclimated with me and Tony. He really put it on us to help the other guys get better, which is good because we’re the leaders. He knows what we are, we know what he’s like, we’re just trying to build on that relationship.”

Jefferson said he knew when the Sooners brought Stoops aboard they were getting a coach he wanted to play for.

“He’s a good coach. I already knew that when before he was coming here,” Jefferson said. “He recruited me at Arizona. I’ve got some boys that go to Arizona, so I kinda knew how he was going to coach.”

Jefferson is aware of Stoops’ past with the Sooners, and is hoping he can make a similar impact.

“He took the team to a national championship,” Jefferson said. “He knows what it takes.”
