For the second time in a matter of hours, Oklahoma has secured a commitment from a player with terrific upside.
Receiver K.J. Young (Perris, Calif./Citrus Hill) picked the Sooners over offers from Colorado State, Boise State, UTEP and UNLV. A relatively unknown prospect until recently, Young joins Austin Bennett (Manvel, Texas/Manvel) and Jordan Smallwood (Jenks, Okla./Jenks) to give OU three receiver commitments for the class of 2013.
And Young could be the most explosive of the bunch.
His combination of ball skills, body control and size should allow him to play slot or outside receiver for the Sooners, making him the most versatile of OU’s receiver commits.
One year after bringing in a class full of highly ranked prospects, receivers coach Jay Norvell is following up with a group of solid players with good upside. Bennett has the skills to play slot receiver, Smallwood brings strength and athleticism to the outside receiver spot and Young appears to bring skills that are unique from his counterparts.
Unlike last season, the Sooners didn’t need to secure immediate help at the position during this recruiting cycle. OU has landed three players who could spend a season improving and learning on the sidelines before competing to make an impact in 2014 while the fruits of Norvell’s labor in last year’s cycle handle the playmaking in 2013.
Sterling Shepard was superb in his first season, Durron Neal impressed with his competitiveness in spot duty, Trey Metoyer started four games and redshirting freshman Derrick Woods appears poised to help in 2013. Norvell seems to have made four quality evaluations with those four receiver signees in the class of 2012.
Thus, there’s no reason to think twice with Norvell’s evaluation of this group, even though it lacks a big name prospect. Receiver is quickly becoming one of the deepest position on the roster. And Norvell’s ability to evaluate is the main reason why.
