After grading the performance of Landry Jones, now's the perfect time to take a closer look at the other quarterbacks on the roster and the commitment list as SoonerNation evaluates the future of the position for Oklahoma.
Here’s a look at one player who could be next in line to make a major impact, one player to keep an eye on and one commitment who could be the future.
Next in line: Blake Bell. The sophomore quarterback appears to be the favorite to win the starting quarterback job in 2013. At 6-foot-6, 254 pounds, he brings terrific size to the position and his running skills have been on display for the past two seasons. Yet questions remain about his ability to run OU’s passing attack. His first opportunity to silence those doubters arrives this spring.
Keep an eye on: Trevor Knight. The redshirting freshman has impressed his teammates and the coaching staff while running the scout team offense against OU’s No. 1 defense. He brings a run-pass ability that is becoming the norm in college football at the quarterback position. His off-the-field intangibles have been just as impressive as his practice performances this season. Don’t be surprised if he starts making waves in the spring.
On the trail: Cody Thomas. In the mold of the other run-pass quarterbacks on campus, Thomas has high upside. The Sooners commit is an elite baseball player who plans to play both sports at OU and showed his versatility during his senior season at Colleyville (Texas) Heritage. He brings the ability to be a quality pro-style passer along with underrated mobility.
Summary: Redshirt freshman Kendal Thompson and junior Drew Allen join Bell and Knight as the quarterbacks on campus who could battle for the starting job in the spring. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel has done a superb job of evaluation and recruiting some promising options to choose from as OU hopes to replace Landry Jones. If anything, OU could be too deep at the position, resulting in potential defections by any quarterback on the roster who doesn’t win the starting job heading into 2013 and would like the opportunity to play.
