First glance: Breaking down Texas

10/8/2012

Campus location: Austin, Texas

Nickname: Longhorns

Conference: Big 12

Record: 4-1 (1-1)

Record vs. OU: 59-42-5

Last game: The Longhorns had a chance to tie West Virginia late, but an errant snap sailed past QB David Ash setting up a 41-yard field goal that Anthony Fera kicked wide right as the Mountaineers held on 48-45 in Austin.

Key player: Ash appears to be one of the most improved QBs in the country. Ash led Texas on a fourth-quarter game-winning drive at Oklahoma State two weeks ago, and nearly quarterbacked the Longhorns to a shootout victory over West Virginia. Ash completed 76 percent of his passes for 269 yards and accounted for two touchdowns.

Why Texas might win: The Longhorns are talented enough defensively to give OU fits, even though they’ve been lit up the last two weeks. Texas’ offense is improved and could exploit the Sooners’ front seven, which has been susceptible to the run.

Why Texas might lose: It doesn’t seem like the Texas defense is up to the task of stopping anyone, and just in time, the OU offense seems to have finally regained its confidence. On the other side of the ball, Ash could have difficulty completing passes against cornerbacks Aaron Colvin and Demontre Hurst.
