Triple Option: Thunder fever helps OU?

6/13/2012

Every weekday morning, a member of the SoonerNation gives his take on three things happening in the Sooner sports world.

1. The state of Oklahoma is alive with Thunder fever. As the Oklahoma City Thunder battle the Miami Heat in the 2012 NBA Finals, you can’t help but wonder what type of impact the NBA team is having on the University of Oklahoma.

Lon Kruger spoke of the impact on his men’s basketball program last week but it’s quite possible the Thunder will have a big impact on OU football as well. After freshman Durron Neal tweeted about attending his first NBA game on Tuesday, it makes you wonder if you can add that to the selling points at the disposal of Sooners coaches.

2. Speaking of championships, the Sooners had four individual NCAA champions this spring, which is pretty impressive. Brittany Borman won her second straight javelin title, Tia Brooks won the outdoor shot put, Jake Dalton won the All-Around and Parallel Bars in men’s gymnastics and Chirapat Jao-Javani won the women’s golf individual NCAA title.

3. After a disappointing end to their season, the OU softball team got good news on Wednesday with the selection of junior catcher Jessica Shults to the 2012 US National Team. She joins pitcher Keilani Ricketts on the squad, which will compete in six different events in the US and Canada this summer. Both players were on last year’s team.
