Every weekday morning, a member of the SoonerNation gives his take on three things happening in the Sooner sports world.
1. Obviously the big news in Oklahoma on Wednesday night was the Thunder’s 77-75 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in front of a rowdy crowd in Oklahoma City. OU men's basketball coach Lon Kruger must be jealous. Energizing the Sooners fan base towards men’s basketball has been a priority for Kruger since he took the job last spring but it didn’t seem to have a major impact during his first season. The impact of the Thunder has been apparent in ticket sales but the veteran coach understands winning sells tickets and believes he can win and fill the seats at Lloyd Noble Arena.
2. Fresh off its ninth Big 12 championship, the Sooners softball team opens the NCAA tournament on Friday when they host the Norman Regional featuring Oregon State, Tulsa and Lehigh. After Oregon State battles Tulsa at 5:30 p.m. OU hosts Leigh at 7 p.m. The No. 4-seeded Sooners are the favorite to win the three-day regional.
3. The OU men’s golf squad holds an NCAA regional of its own beginning today at Jimmie Austin Golf Course. Head coach Ryan Hybl’s squad is looking to make its second straight appearance at the NCAA Golf Championships. Several elite teams including top-ranked Texas, No. 9 Georgia Tech, No. 13 Washington and No. 24 Florida State will join the No. 30-ranked Sooners in the three-day regional. The top five teams in the 54-hole event will advance to the NCAA Golf Championships on May 29-June 3 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
