Oklahoma assistant coach James Patton told three-star offensive tackle Christian Daimler (Houston/Stratford) to be patient.

Daimler made an unofficial visit to OU during the summer, and Patton told Daimler and his father that it might be a while until the Sooners got around to making their evaluation.

It did take a while, but it all worked out. OU offered Daimler on Tuesday night, and he flipped his commitment from Arizona State to OU on Wednesday night.

“I trusted Coach Patton and took him at his word,” Daimler said. “I couldn’t be happier that I did that.”

Daimler committed to the Sun Devils in the summer but said he fell in love with Norman, Okla., during his unofficial visit. He said the area exceeded his expectations.

But he had to wait. Things turned a corner in the last week as Patton and OU linebackers coach Tim Kish came down to Houston several times during the last three weeks.

“This is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Daimler said. “Coach Patton and Coach Kish have been coming down and talking with me, my coaches and my family.

“They were showing me more and more interest. I thought this offer would happen, but I didn’t know when.”

After getting the offer, Daimler said he sat down with his parents, and they agreed the best decision was to decommit from Arizona State and pledge to the Sooners.

Patton was one of the first coaches to recognized Daimler, who is 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds. Patton was there for the first spring practice during Daimler’s junior season, and the relationship has only blossomed since that time.

Daimler was also receiving some late interest from Missouri, but he knew he wanted to be a Sooner and has set up his official visit for Jan. 11.

He is hoping to see OU before then, though. Daimler said he would love to watch the Sooners go against Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4.

“I wasn’t an OU fan growing up. I was actually an Aggie so it is kind of cool how everything has worked out,” Daimler said. “I’m trying to get on my dad to get us to go, but I don’t know. I’m just so excited right now.”

OU entered Wednesday without one offensive tackle commit. The Sooners leave Wednesday with two. Four-star junior college tackle Josiah St. John (Athens, Texas/Trinity Valley) committed to the Sooners minutes before Daimler announced his commitment.

Daimler is OU’s 18th commit for the 2013 class. After striking out on defensive and offensive tackles, the last four commits for the Sooners have been either OTs or DTs.

“The tradition that OU has is incredible,” Daimler said. “The coaching staff is amazing. I can’t believe the relationship I’ve built with the coaches.

“There is nobody better in my opinion. I’m ready to go in there and compete for conference and national championships.”
