Vitals: Defensive end Matt Dimon, Katy, Texas/Katy | 6-foot-3, 250 pounds
Committed: March 13, 2012
ESPN.com grade: 82. Four-star prospect.
ESPN.com rankings: No. 284 in ESPN 300, No. 24 defensive end, No. 47 in Midlands region, No. 41 in Texas
Picked OU over: Arkansas, Missouri, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech and others.
State of the position: The Sooners are in pretty good position at defensive end with the development of freshmen Charles Tapper and Michael Onuoha. And Geneo Grissom has earned some playing time and could compete for a starting spot in 2013. Nonetheless, you can never have too many quality defensive linemen. Also, don’t be shocked if he ends up moving inside to defensive tackle.
Pros: “He is listed as a D-end, but could very well develop into an interior player at the next level. Overall, he has good size, looks to have a thick build and possess good upper and lower body playing strength. He is a physical player who will wrap up and run through tackles.” - ESPN scouting report
Cons: “Dimon is a bit of a 'tweener at this stage, but he is also a good football player. He displays solid speed and closing burst for his size, but for an end, his range looks somewhat limited.” - ESPN scouting report
Similar to/potential role: David King. Much like King, Dimon has the size and versatility to play anywhere along the defensive line. With Tapper and Onuoha already on campus, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see all three on the field together at times during their careers.
Expect an impact in: 2013. Even though the Sooners have some young talent at defensive end, the position is wide open for the taking and OU prefers to rotate its defensive linemen. Dimon has the size and ability to play immediately so he could earn spot duty in 2013, much like Tapper and Onuoha in 2012. But a major impact will likely won’t be felt until 2014.
