Nickname: Red Raiders
Conference: Big 12
Record: 4-0 (1-0)
Record vs. OU: 6-13
Last game: Senior quarterback Seth Doege tossed three touchdown passes and Texas Tech held off Iowa State 24-13 over the weekend in its Big 12 opener. Doege's 19-yard TD pass to Eric Ward put Tech up 21-13 with 10:36 left, and Ryan Bustin added a 39-yard field goal with 2:20 to go. The Red Raiders defense forced Iowa State QB Steele Jantz to throw three interceptions and fumble the ball for another turnover.
Key player: Doege is the heart and soul of the Red Raiders offense, and is off to a fabulous start to the season with 15 TD passes to just three interceptions. Doege was near flawless in Tech’s 41-38 win in Norman last season.
Why Texas Tech might win: No program in the Big 12 has given OU fits over the years like Texas Tech. The Sooners haven’t won in Lubbock since 2003, and Tech snapped OU’s home winning streak last season. The Red Raiders appear to be just as good offensively, but much improved on defense.
Why Texas Tech might lose: The Sooners have revenge on their mind, and are looking to show they’re better than the team that lost to Kansas State two weeks ago. OU’s secondary is much improved and figures to be Doege’s toughest test by far so far this season.
