NORMAN, Okla. -- Despite Saturday’s 24-19 loss to Kansas State, Bob Stoops said during his weekly news conference he still feels good about his team’s leadership and mental toughness.

“I‘ve got no reason to doubt it,” Stoops said Monday. “I’m pleased with the leadership. Guys have worked hard, they played hard. We just couldn’t overcome the turnovers.

Jim Cowsert/US PRESSWIREOklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he still has confidence in quarterback Landry Jones leading the Sooners.
“It hurts them. We just got to move forward.”

During a late-season collapse in 2011, Stoops questioned the mental makeup of his team, and eventually asked several players to leave the program. Stoops indicated this team has done better with the intangibles, but admitted, “We’re about to find out more about it. We’ll see.”

Stoops also shot down any chance of a quarterback controversy while coming to the defense of Landry Jones, whose two turnovers led to a pair of K-State touchdowns. Jones also overthrew a wide-open receiver in the end zone during OU’s first possession, forcing the Sooners to settle for a field goal.

“Landry is a very bright guy that watching [the film] will see that maybe he’s trying to make too much of something,” Stoops said. “And the opportunity to throw it away at times is a good play, instead of trying to force it.

“We do have confidence in him. Guy played a ton of good football. He has to avoid the bad plays. He knows that. He’s a mature guy that everybody has confidence in I believe. He’ll make it up as we move forward.”

Jones also took the podium Monday, and said that he’s “underachieving.”

Jones has six turnovers in his last two Big 12 games, including four in last season’s 44-10 loss at Oklahoma State.

“I feel like I’m underachieving,” he said. “I have to play at a higher level.”
