NORMAN, Okla. -- Running back Damien Williams has stepped into a veteran backfield at Oklahoma. Senior Dominique Whaley appears to be the starter, striving for his breakout production in 2011; junior Brennan Clay is arguably the Sooners' most consistent back and junior Roy Finch brings a “wow” factor to the backfield.
Yet Williams is making a good impression.
“He’s a big back, he’s fast, he’s physical,” running backs coach Cale Gundy said. “I’ve been really impressed with how he’s been able to pick things up and the knowledge of being a football guy.
"We plan on playing him. He’s doing a good job.”
Williams could be one reason the Sooners are tinkering with using Finch in the slot. He would provide a quality option at running back and help lessen any drop off if the injury bug hits the running back position like it did in 2011.
