Oklahoma Sooners: Tennessee Volunteers

Heading into the spring, it was difficult to imagine any duo in the West region stealing the recruiting spotlight from Gardena (Calif.) Serra's Adoree' Jackson and Dwight Williams. And while the five-star cornerback and four-star linebacker still rank as two of the more highly-recruited players in the country, some of the buzz has shifted to another set of teammates in Southern California. You won't hear much complaining from Jackson and Williams, however, as they share a locker room with the new dynamic duo.

Outside linebacker John Houston and defensive end Rasheem Green -- stars of the 2015 recruiting class -- didn't step into the recruiting process this spring; they dove in. For both, it was outstanding performances at the Los Angeles Nike Camp that catapulted them onto the radars of college coaches. UCLA offered both shortly after the event and they have been on a roll since then.

The spring evaluation period always brings more offers, and Oklahoma hasn’t disappointed in that department.

The Sooners' coaching staff spent the first couple of weeks evaluating recruits, reconvened and now are hitting the road to make offers.

When offer No. 31 came in for Washington (Pa.) running back Shai McKenzie last week, he figured it was time to start cutting his list. It sounds simple, but McKenzie had a harder time when it came to putting pen to paper.

“He struggled to make a list,” Washington coach Mike Bosnic said. “He’s really unsure.”

Not every top basketball prospect signed with a school in the fall. Some needed a solid senior season to open up even more eyes.

Case in point is three-star shooting guard Frank Booker (Augusta, Ga./Westside). Booker had some offers heading into his senior season. He didn’t make a decision, believing bigger and better things would be coming his way.

Levenberry 'firmly committed' to FSU

Tennessee's recruitment of E.J. Levenberry is essentially over just after it restarted.

The four-star linebacker from Woodbridge (Va.) Hylton is "firmly committed" to Florida State, according to his father, Eric Levenberry. The elder Levenberry said his son told newly hired Tennessee assistant coach Tommy Thigpen not to bother visiting the family tonight.

The Vols were in the hunt to land Levenberry before they hired former defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri. He, unlike former Tennessee linebackers coach Lance Thompson, didn't recruit the ESPN 300 prospect. Once the Vols fired third-year coach Derek Dooley last month, they seemed back in the hunt for Levenberry, who had always spoken highly of the school. That apparently has changed.

Levenberry registered 172 tackles this season, 14 pass deflections, one forced fumble, 24 quarterback hurries and an interception. He picked Florida State in April over Michigan, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Junior college tight end Beau Sandland (Woodland Hills, Calif./Pierce) is one of the most highly-recruited players at his position in the nation, but the 6-foot-5, 250-pound athlete said Monday that he had to eliminate an entire conference from his possible destinations. Sandland earned offers from Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas A&M out of the SEC, but he won't be at any of those schools in January.

Sandland said that in order to graduate in December and enroll early at his school of choice, he will need to take an online math class through a school other than Woodland Hills Pierce. He added that while the SEC made a recent change to allow student-athletes who have completed online math and English courses, they must be taken through the school the student attends, which is not possible for Sandland.

"I've been talking to the coaches and obviously they are disappointed," Sandland said of the SEC coaches. "They said it's a big problem for them and they've lost recruits to this."

Junior college tight end Beau Sandland (Woodland Hills, Calif./Pierce College) is making the most of his first foray into the recruiting process. A non-qualifier out of high school, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound athlete turned in an impressive showing on the recruiting trail this offseason. Beginning in February, Sandland said it felt as though he collected an offer -- and sometimes two -- each day, through the end of spring. Though things have slowed considerably since then with the end of the spring evaluation period and fall camps starting, Monday proved that it isn’t over completely, as Tennessee stepped forward with a scholarship offer.

“It’s been fun,” Sandland said of recruiting. “This is the first time I’ve ever gone through it, so I didn’t fully know what to expect. You hear stories and see the sophomores from last year, but it’s been a really exciting and fun time. It can get a little hectic, but in a good way. It’s been really humbling talking to these schools and having offers from some of the top programs in the nation.”

Several SEC heavyweights extended offers to Sandland, including Florida, Georgia, LSU and Mississippi, though he took opportunities this summer to get a better feel for programs in other conferences. Pac-12 programs Arizona State, California and UCLA received unofficial visits, while Nebraska was the recipient of an official visit. This weekend, Sandland will travel for Oklahoma for his second official visit.

Four-star defensive lineman De'Asian Richardson (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park) will make a verbal commitment this weekend, Orange Park assistant coach Ryan Wolfe said.

The 6-foot-3, 280-pound senior will choose between West Virginia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Missouri.

"He's probably going to make the decision sometime Sunday and we might wait until Monday morning to call the school and announce it at that time," said Wolfe.
