Oklahoma Sooners: Arizona State Sun Devils

The 2015 quarterback class in California is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory, and Tyler Hilinski (Upland, Calif./Upland) is well on his way to putting himself in the middle of that conversation.

The 6-foot-3 quarterback led his team to the finals of the Gamebreaker Classis this past weekend, as he put together a terrific performance on the second day. In a tournament filled with 2015 talent, Hilinski stood out as one of the most productive underclassmen in attendance.

It was around November when four-star cornerback L.J. Moore (Fresno, Calif./Central East) thought there was no chance he was ever going to commit to Oklahoma.

Moore, who is 6-foot and 164 pounds and ranked No. 29 at cornerback, had a lot of OU interest in the summer and had planned for an official visit in October. When the visit never materialized, he thought it was over.

ESPN Watch List quarterback Justice Hansen (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) can stop having people ask about when the Sooners will offer. It’s a question he has heard several times in the last year.

Hansen can answer now. The offer came Saturday, and the Sooners are officially in the race to land one of the more highly touted in-state prospects of the last few years.

For a while, it looked like four-star cornerback L.J. Moore (Fresno, Calif./Central East) and Oklahoma never were going to get on the same page.

There was a different feeling for three-star offensive tackle Christian Daimler (Houston/Stratford) walking around the Oklahoma campus this weekend.

It wasn’t his first time, but it was a much better time. Daimler made an unofficial visit with his father during the summer where Daimler admitted he fell in love with the Sooners.

Desmond Harrison has taken all of his official visits. He’s done all but one of his in-home visits. The checklist is almost complete. All that’s left is to make a decision.

The three-star Contra Costa (Calif.) College offensive tackle hosted coaches from Texas and Arizona State last week and USC is expected to make one in the near future, though Harrison doesn’t know when.

After that, the 6-foot-8, 310-pound lineman will sit down with his mother, sort out his options and make his choice.

Oklahoma assistant coach James Patton told three-star offensive tackle Christian Daimler (Houston/Stratford) to be patient.

Daimler made an unofficial visit to OU during the summer, and Patton told Daimler and his father that it might be a while until the Sooners got around to making their evaluation.

It did take a while, but it all worked out. OU offered Daimler on Tuesday night, and he flipped his commitment from Arizona State to OU on Wednesday night.

“I trusted Coach Patton and took him at his word,” Daimler said. “I couldn’t be happier that I did that.”

Daimler committed to the Sun Devils in the summer but said he fell in love with Norman, Okla., during his unofficial visit. He said the area exceeded his expectations.

After decommitting from Colorado in October, three-star tight end Mitchell Parsons (Parker, Colo./Chaparral) has been all about finding a college home that fits him. Whether that decision comes sooner or later is still the question.

Parsons said that while he is still open with his process, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss are current front-runners. Both schools have offered the 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end, in addition to Arizona State, Cal and Northern Colorado.

“I want it over with badly,” Parsons said of the process, "but I’m going to make an educated choice. It’s stressful, for sure, but I mean, I’m glad I opened it up.”

There has been a significant change in Lavon Hooks' recruitment.

Originally scheduled to visit Auburn this weekend, the highly coveted junior college defensive tackle from Northeast Mississippi Community College will take an official visit to Miami instead. Hooks said Auburn is still a finalist despite not taking an official visit there.

Hooks has already taken his other four official visits -- to Nebraska, Arizona State, Ole Miss and Baylor -- in November. Still, he's familiar with Mississippi State and Auburn from previous unofficial visits there. Despite not taking an official visit to see the Tigers up close, Hooks maintained that Auburn if a finalist.

In the summer, junior college tight end Beau Sandland (Woodland Hills, Calif./Pierce College) made it pretty clear. His decision wasn’t going to happen overnight.

It wasn’t going to happen in the summer nor during the football season. He was going to make all of his visits, and he would be ready by the December signing period.

He admits it hasn’t been easy, but Sandland has been a man of his word. Because Pierce College played all of its games on Saturdays, Sandland has rarely been able to experience a game-day atmosphere on an official visit.

Timing in recruiting is almost everything. Three-star defensive end Dimarya Mixon (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite) found that out on Monday night.

Mixon, who is 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, was told by OU defensive ends coach Bobby Jack Wright the Sooners are full at defensive end and were no longer considering accepting a potential commitment.

That potential commitment likely was coming for the Sooners, Mixon said.
