Michigan is coming off one of its best weekends in recent memory, with eight football commitments for the Class of 2013, a massive win in men's basketball over Ohio State, and even wins in hockey and softball.

In other words, it was a good weekend to be a Michigan fan.

Signing day is fast approaching, and true to form it has already been a hectic few weeks leading up to Wednesday. The Michigan coaching staff has limited remaining scholarships, but specific targets to fill those spots.

Missing out on offensive lineman Josh Garnett (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) to Stanford was a big deal, but there are still a few top level prospects Michigan is after.

Jordan Diamond (Chicago/Simeon) will be announcing his decision on Friday and is down to Michigan, Arkansas, Auburn and Wisconsin after he officially cut Ohio State from his list. Diamond just took his final official visit to Wisconsin and should be sitting down with his mother to figure out his choice in the next few days.

Impact of Garnett's decision

Offensive lineman Joshua Garnett (Puyallup, Wash./Puyallup) gave his verbal commitment to Stanford on Thursday at a news conference at his high school. Garnett chose the Cardinal over Michigan in what seemed to be a tight race to the end.

The four-star lineman had seemed to be favoring the Wolverines for some time, but ultimately chose to stay closer to home.

Garnett is the No. 44 overall prospect in the ESPNU 150. He would have been Michigan’s highest-ranked recruit. Instead, cornerback Terry Richardson (Detroit/Cass Tech) holds on to that honor, as he's ranked No. 68.

Well, winter has officially hit Ann Arbor. Being from Minnesota, I’ve always enjoyed the snow, but along with the gray, ugly Michigan winters (which, I’m not a fan of) come a few other things I enjoy -- football playoffs, basketball, signing day.

We’re on the brink of a Super Bowl that doesn’t include Tim Tebow (I only wish it did because SNL would’ve had more material), a Michigan basketball season that is anything but predictable and we’re less than a week away from Michigan football coach Brady Hoke inking his first full class of commitments.

Four-star offensive lineman Alex Kozan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor Christian) on Sunday said he is nearing a decision and hopes to know his college future by the end of the week.

Kozan, who has more than 20 offers, said he has cut his list to Michigan, Iowa and Auburn. He has in-home visits set for this week. Iowa and Michigan will be in town Monday. Washington, a darkhorse in the running, will be in town Tuesday. Kozan will host Auburn on Wednesday.

“I’m kind of going on a feeling,” Kozan said. “I know all the facts on them, and they are all pretty equal in my mind.”

Michigan's options post Dunn

Tuesday night we learned that Ohio State commit Bri'onte Dunn (Canton, Ohio/Glenoak) will remain committed to the Buckeyes. The Wolverines had been pursuing Dunn hard, and at one point looked like they had a good shot at flipping their second Buckeye commitment, along with offensive lineman Kyle Kalis.

Now that Dunn has made his decision known, the Michigan coaching staff will have some options as to how it fills that spot.

The 2012 class already has running back Drake Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and fullback Sione Houma (Salt Lake City/Highland). Both prospects weigh more than 200 pounds, and both are around the 6-foot mark. That's just how the Michigan coaches want their running backs -- big and strong.

Commits enjoy big visit weekend

This was a big visit weekend for Michigan as there were upwards of 14 prospects on hand. There were a few uncommitted recruits the coaches are going after, including tight end Sam Grant (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Edward) and offensive lineman Alex Kozan (Highlands Ranch, Co./Valor Christian), but the committed prospects made up the majority of the visitors.

Around 13 of Michigan's 2012 commitments decided they would all take their official visits on the same weekend and share the experience together.

This trip gave them all a good look at what it will be like to be in Ann Arbor next year, and what it will be like to be around each other for the next four years.

Colorado lineman interested in Michigan

When the Michigan coaches decided to offer offensive lineman Alex Kozan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor Christian), everyone seemed a bit surprised, including Kozan himself.

Once he spoke with the coaches and discussed their goals and reason for offering, it all made sense.

"They told me that they didn't offer me earlier because they didn't think they were going to take an interior lineman," he said. "That changed, and now they're going to take a tackle or guard. The timing doesn't really bother me."
