S Malcolm Cook re-opens recruitment
By Josh Moyer
Malcolm Cook (Fork Union, Va./Fork Union) hasn't officially decommitted from Virginia following the firing of four assistants, but the safety said he's re-opening his recruitment.
In the last 48 hours, the prospect has received 11 offers and entertained visits and phone calls from the likes of Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and USC. He planned to speak with the Trojans after basketball practice Wednesday, and he chatted in-person with Penn State assistant Charles London on Tuesday.
"It doesn't really matter to me about other schools looking at me," he said, when asked whether this new attention was a consolation. "The reason I committed to Virginia was because of the defensive coordinator, Coach [Jim] Reid. So I was really hurt by Coach Reid not being there.
"He's a great man, and he's been recruiting me since my ninth-grade year. Anything I needed, I called him. Whenever I needed advice, he was there. He was just a helpful person."
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect said he plans to schedule five official visits and hopefully make his decision around mid-January. He'll head home from the military academy on Dec. 19 and wants to talk those visits over with his mother before making anything final.
He insisted he holds no favorites, but he acknowledged interest in visiting Miami (Fla.), Ohio State, TCU, USC -- and possibly the Cavaliers. He already made an unofficial visit to Penn State, along with teammate and PSU commit Christian Hackenberg.
"Penn State's still in the mix," Cook added. "You know, with the sanctions with them and Miami that's going on, that's pulling me away from them, but I'm still keeping them on the board. ... I hear from Hack every day about it."
He's aiming to find a school with a similar feeling to Virginia -- good academics, a rural-type campus still near the city, a good social environment and teammates he feels comfortable with. Until he finds a school he likes more than Virginia, he said he'll remain committed to the Cavaliers.
His new offers came from Kentucky, Miami (Fla.), NC State, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Syracuse, TCU, Tennessee, Toledo, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
"All of them are really the same to me right now," Cook said. "But they all showed big interest, so I'm going to show interest in them. It's nice to know I got more options."
