Latest offers surprise LB Yeargin
By Derek Tyson
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Linebacker Richard Yeargin III (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./University School) has seen his stock continue to rise in recruiting circles. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound athlete was recently surprised, however, by three new offers.
"I received offers from Michigan, Notre Dame and TCU," Yeargin said Saturday at the IMG 7v7 Southeast regional championships. "They are meaningful. I mean every offer means something, but with Notre Dame -- it was a relief because I was waiting on that offer. Michigan, it caught me by surprise, to some degree and TCU definitely caught me by surprise. I just wasn't expecting a school from Texas to offer me."
Yeargin was excited to learn of the Notre Dame offer and with the Wolverines, the talented defender said he likes that Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has a history of placing players in the NFL.
"Notre Dame has been recruiting me since the beginning of my junior season and I was like 'man, what is taking them so long to offer?' Boom, there it was at like 6 o'clock in morning.
"With Michigan, I really like coach Mattison. He has a very good resume' as far as the guys that he has coached and helped a long the way. With me being a Florida guy a lot of people are like 'is he really thinking about Michigan?' But I'm not afraid to travel. His track record really is impressive."
Though it isn't set in stone, Yeargin said there are a few schools that are standing out in his head.
"I sort of kind of have an idea of some schools," he said hesitantly. "I'd say Florida, Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan and UCLA. Towards the end of December I'll start talking about real favorites like these are my strong leaders. Probably any time after the bowl season's when coaches make their decisions as far as what they want to do, then I'll make my decision."
